Vista amp; Gedcom permissions

Post by moscow » 15 Apr 2008 04:39

Just tried using GEDCOM (latest) on my new computer and when I try and save I get an error message asking if I have sufficient permissions to write data to the back up folder. Anyone know how to get round this?

Where is the backup folder? Is it in the default location?

Is your user account standard? I think I run mine with administrator permissions.

Make sure you are keeping all your data and your backup folder in the Documents directory, with Vista it is important not to store data in the program files directory.

I believe this is one of the changes V6 implemented.

Look under Tools->Options and look at the backup folder path. By default in the current version of Gedcom Census it creates a folder in your documents to store the backup in. If you've set the backup folder to be elsewhere then make sure you've got permissions to write to the folder (but I'd recommend backing up into a sub-folder in your documents folder).

Thanks folks. I should have said that the backup folder is the default - ie. within my own user documents path, as are the gedcom files. I am the only user set up on the computer and shown as administrator within control panel . Vista is new to me so I'm struggling to work through any issues.

Does the folder referred to in the backup path exist? When you first run Gedcom Census 6 it will create a folder to save the backups in. I don't have access to Gedcom Census at the moment but off the top of my head it is something like 'Gedcom Census Backups and Logs' and should be in your Documents folder.

Thanks Nick. As often, it was the bleeding obvious solution. For whatever reason, the GEDCOM back up folder had not been created, so I did it manually with the same path and name and it has worked.
