Family Historian User Group

Is there any way of getting a report from the flag check utility in GCC?
I've added census flags manually in FH, so the check program throws up lots of 'errors', but now I want to do a catch up on adding the census events via GCC. It would be great if I could get a text file or printed report to work through and tick off.

Hi David

I'm not sure exactly what you mean? The Flag Check process just lists the flags that need to be added or removed so as to stay consistent with the census flags you've allocated to census dates. If you just press OK on the flag check it will fix the problems for you.

As I understand it the flag check reports where there are flags set in the FH ged file for which there is no census event recorded. If I click OK I assumed that it would simply remove the flags from the ged file, which is not what I want. Do tell me if it does something cleverer than this!
I want to be able to use the list (as a checklist - either printed or as a text file)from Flag Check to now (via GCC) add the census details (and events) into FH.

If I understand you correctly you are using one flag to mean two different things - that the census details have been added via GCC and also that the Census information still needs to be added. If that is the case wouldn't it be better to use a different flag to show that the census data is still required? You could then use a Query in FH to extract the relevant information and then copy and paste it into a spreadsheet or word procesor.

Not quite Gerry.

When I first find a person or family in the census I first enter the information into a 'timeline' spreadsheet for that family (or group of families). At that stage I may add the peoples names to FH, or they may already be there, either way I set the census xx flag. I've found this spreadsheet approach much better for seeing the 'bigger picture' for a family, when doing initial research.

Only when I'm pretty sure that I have the correct person/family (ie the timeline spreadsheet all shows a consistent picture, including BMD dates where found) will I enter the census details, source references, multimedia links etc via GCC.

Works for me, it would just be more convenient to be able to output a checklist from Flag Check to help with stage 2.

The flags that Gedcom Census deals with are purely to tell you whether or not a census event has been added for that person for a particular year. It seems to me that the flags you are using are telling you something different and therefore GC won't really be able to help with that. Just make sure the flags that Gedcom Census are using (to represent an existing census event) are different to the flags you are using in Family Historian to represent a census event needs to be created.

As Gerry says it would then make more sense to have a query in Family Historian listing all the people who need a census record creating.

Well the answer is no I think because what you're asking doesn't really apply to Gedcom Census. GC deals with the flags it knows about which are used for the purposes of tracking existing census events, not future events. However, Family Historian is great for this kind of thing!

What I'm asking for is is only indirectly related to the way GCC uses flags.

If, as a result of the flag check, GCC is going to delete flags from my ged file I'd at least like to be able to get a list of what it's going to delete before deciding to proceed. Even being able to copy and paste text from the flag check screen would do.

As a workaround I've taken umpteen screen captures of the list window and pasted them into an Excel file to use as a checklist.

Let's just agree to forget that I suggested it for a wish list [wink] I still think it's a brilliant program.
