Hi All,

It's been a while since I've done any research, but am now picking up the thread again. I've been a user of FH for a good while now but only ever in its basic functions. However, I would now like to start adding images of the sources (census, birth death, baptism records etc) into the programme.
Currently I just have a generic name for each source i.e 'Birth certificate' or 'baptism record' which I apply to all individuals. I have just tried to add a birth cert image as media to a specific Birth Certificate source, but because of the simple way I have set up my source naming of course now that same source image appears against nearly every individual in my programme....whoops!!!

So, I now understand that I will need to go through and add the media to each individuals record....that's not a problem.....the question is...is there actually a recommended naming convention for the image files or does it just come down to each persons preference?

I also see that Ancestral Sources is going to be developed to handle such source images as well, but does anyone have any idea when that might be released?

Thanks for any guidance,

Fred [grin]

Hi Fred

Ancestral Sources can handle Census and Baptism records and is available for donwload on this site. I am about to begin beta testing a new version that also deals with Marriages and so this should be available in a few weeks. Ancestral Sources also supports linking census and baptism (and marriages soon) images to existing sources or events.

I'd recommend trying Ancestral Sources with a copy of your file to get an understanding of what it does. It allows you to get consistency for your source and image names and this may give you some ideas as to how you want to do things.

In Ancestral Sources terminology you are using 'Recording Method 2' (a single source with multiple entries against it). The default method for Ancestral Sources is 'Recording Method 1'- a source for each entry (e.g. a particular census household, a particular child's baptism, a particular couple's marriage certificate). You end up with a lot of sources in your file, but this doesn't matter. It makes it far easier to find particular records and as you've pointed out it is easy to link an image against each source. Also if you transcribe an entry it is recorded in just one place in your file - in the source text.

Hope that helps

Nick

The current version of Ancestral Sources (v2.0.0) provides probably the best means of data entry for census and baptism events, and also facilitates the addition of relevant images to existing source records for these events.

There is a hint here that the next version will also deal with marriages: [topic]5046|[/topic]

and that its release is imminent: [topic]5007|[/topic]

edit: Nick beat me to it!

In Ancestral Sources terms you are using Method 2 where you have many Facts/Citations all linking to one Source Record.
As you have discovered this poses a challenge on where to add specific details such as Multimedia without it applying to every linked Fact.

This is why Ancestral Sources suggests using its Method 1 with a separate Source Record for each item of proof.
Then Multimedia can be linked, and Transcripts entered in the Text From Source field, of each Source Record.

Returning to Method 2, Ancestral Sources suggests and supports adding Multimedia to the Facts/Citations rather than the Individual whole Record.

Depending on how many Facts with Citations you have, it may be worth considering switching to Method 1 now, at least for those Facts with new Multimedia.
Ancestral Sources will be a boon in making this transition, and offers ways of setting consistent naming schemes.

Although, AS only supports Census and Baptism events at present, I believe Marriage will be added soon, and Death, Burial, and Probate later.

[Edit] Nick & Peter both beat me, but I forgot to mention the AS tutorials at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... rces:index

Thanks for all the help....very useful. I have started using Ancestral Sources and am very impressed by the way it handles the details. A quick question for you though ref the 1911 census:

1) The 1911 census has the detailed page that contains the specific info on the family, whereas the Schedule page contains both the reference details and the full address. I would like to include both as source image records to the 1911 census, but currently Ancestral Sources only seems to allow one image per entry. Am I doing something wrong?

i'm looking forward to it being able to handle the other sources (marriages, deaths and GRO records) :-)

Thanks for the kind words regarding Ancestral Sources. I'm glad you find it useful.

There is no limit to the number of images you can attach. On the image viewer screen just click on Add Image at the top.

Best wishes

Nick
