AS Census templates - change of bride's name

Post by aaj1945 » 10 May 2012 15:51

As a novice pensioner I would like some advice as to how to deal with a bride's change of name upon marriage, particularly when using the Ancestral Sources Census template.
Although one has entered a marriage using the marriages template, the name change does not seem to have filtered through to the census. If one changes the name or adds the maiden name in brackets before the new surname then this name seems to supersede the maiden name in the names list which would be inappropriate when dealing with facts prior to marriage. And even more confusing with female multiple marriages.

The convention in Genealogy is to always use the Birth name of an Individual, even after Marriage.

Software like FH cannot determine what name to use, because it does not know the context of usage.
Is it being used before or after Marriage, and if multiple Marriages, which one?

By using the Property Box more... option you can add Alternative Names, but in FH and AS a woman is primarily always known by her Birth/Maiden name.

In AS the Married Surname only appears in the Census Grid and thus in the Text Transcript.

Thanks for the swift responses.
This is my first venture into using software for genealogy research. Up until now I have been transcribing census data verbatim into a spreadsheet as a matter of record so the wife was entered with the husband's surname just as the enumerator wrote it.

That's what Ancestral Sources allows you to do. The transcription is at the bottom of the screen in the source text - when you press the Auto button. If the names in the census don't match what you see then simply edit this source text to match.
