Problem with multimedia

Post by Dagwood » 25 Jun 2011 18:26

I can't figure out what is gioing wrong with my additions and links to multimedia. I'm copying items as used into my default folder and creating links as I go along but somehow they are not appearing when I click on the relevant item in each persons record. In adddition earlier additions of multimedia seem to have disappeared or are appearing as a rectangle with a diagonal cross in it. Am I expecting too much? Should a media item be visible after linking and copying via A.S.? I think I am doing as the new tutorialss suggest. Any suggestions most welcome.

Problem with multimedia

When you say you are 'clicking on the relevant item in each persons record' - if you are linking your images using the default methods, the images should be linked to the sources, rather than an individual's record. You might view the image by, for example, looking at the census event for an individual, then selecting the source linked to the citation for that event. You may find the following page helps as it explains where to find the data in Family Historian after it has been added in Ancestral Sources: Ancstral Sources Knowledge Base Article: Examining Family Historian

Regarding your other point, if you have crosses for your multimedia then it suggests that you've moved the pictures on your hard-disk, without letting Family Historian know where you've put them. You may find the FH Tools->Work with External File Links useful

Just to clarify, can you confirm whether you using FH V4 Projects or FH V3 style non-project GEDCOM.

Also, what options are you choosing in the A.S. Image Viewer when linking the images?

Hi there, and many thanks for your replies.
Nick, thanks for your link that has been most helpful. I now think I had become confused between media added to individuals before I used AS and media added through AS to support facts. I guess I was expecting to see images appear when I hit Multimedia in the Property Box when really I needed to open the Facts tab and then select the source. Hope that makes sense!
I cannot recall having moved media ,in fact I have been loading it into the Media folder in advance of using it in AS. Perhaps that is wrong?

Tatewise, I'm using V4 and started using Link New Image until I preloaded my census and other images into the Media (default) folder. After that I started to use Link Existing Image etc. The only other option I can see is under Image Title ie Same as Filename but have never used anything different to that.

I appreciate your help and hope the above points to what I have been doing wrong. Thanks,
Dagwood

There is nothing wrong in loading new images into the Media folder before linking them with AS.
I assume by this that you are just loading a file and not creating a Multimedia record in FH too.
If this is so, I think you must be mistaken about using Link existing image already in file to link these new images, because that option only lists existing Multimedia records and their linked images.
You must always have to use Link new image to create a new Multimedia record linked to a new image.
But if the new image is already in the Media folder or a sub-folder, then the option in the tutorials to choose the Media folder to copy the image into is skipped.

Referring to the problem in FH with a X instead of media, does this happen with AS images linked via Source records on Multimedia tab, or only images you linked directly to Individual records?
In any case use Tools > Work with External File Links and this will illustrate the Media folder structure and images that FH expects to find.
Any image that is missing or in wrong folder will have an X next to it.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate your Media folder and check to see if it matches what FH expects.
You can either use Windows Explorer to move the image files to where FH expects them, or use Work with External File Links and use the Re-Map button to tell FH where the image files are located.

Thanks Tatewise, Your first para is, I think, the answer to much of my problem. Because the files were in the Media fold assumed I needeed to link to an existing file, I'll correct that from now on.
I'll also follow up your advice ,and that of Nick, to use the facility to Work with External File Links - I also saw and found helpful your answer to Stormswift in the V4 Usage section.
Hopefully I'll get myself straightened out tomorrow. Thanks again,
Dagwood
