Error Message - Help
I am trying to add a baptism record for an individual in my tree (Edward Francis Fitzgerald id no 319).
When I click on the save icon I get an error message 'Individual Edward Francis FITZGERALD [319] is already linked as a child in a family and therfore this entry can not be saved with the selected parent(s).'
But the parents I am trying to save the record with are the same parents as are recorded in FH.
I have saved several baptisms with no problem, so I am at a loss what is causing this problem. Can you give me any suggestions?

When you say 'the same parents as are recorded in FH', do they have the same Record Id enclosed in square brackets following their names.
You should be selecting Edward's parents by choosing their existing names from the Parents box on the right-hand side of AS.
Do not use the Add Parent... blue link above the same box, which will create duplicate parents that cannot be saved.

Thats odd. I was using the record id of the father who was already in my tree, and entering the name of the mother as a person not in the tree when the error message ocurred. I have now entered the mother into the tree in FH then used her id number in Ancestral Sources and it has worked ok.

I can repeat the error message if the Mother is entered on the main grid instead of using the Add Parent... link on the right.
This is related to a similar scenario where neither parent exists in FH, but one is added using the main grid and the other by using the Add Parent... link.
I believe that Nick Walker is aware of these problems.

Yes - that is exactly how I triggered the error message. The father was auto filled when I clicked 'Select' - Individual on the right, and then typed in the mothers name as she was not already in my tree. Now I know the cause it's easily worked around and a minor problem in an excellent piece of software.

It isn't actually an error message though. This is by design - as the individual is already recorded as being a child in a family it isn't possible to add a parent directly in the grid. Entering information in the grid is only for simple cases where an existing parental family isn't recorded or for a new child of an existing family. For other cases the 'Add Parent...' or 'Add Child...' needs to be used.
I do concede though that ideally it would be a bit more flexible.

Now I understand it, it makes perfect sense. I must admit though that when the message first came up I could not understand why. Perhaps in a future version the message could be amended to prompt the user to enter new additional parents in FH?

Oh sorry - forget my last post - I just noticed what you meant by Add Parent... shows how unobservant I am - I didn't notice that option on the right.

Perhaps when these 'simple cases' don't apply the Individual &/or Father &/or Mother grid fields should become 'greyed-out/read-only' so that names cannot be entered other than by using the <<Select button. Then the 'Message' will never occur.Nick Walker said:

Yes you've suggested that before Mike and I'll look at it for the next version. As I said its not ideal currently.
