Transfer of data from AS to FH

Can anyone help me with a problem which has appeared seemingly since i updated to include the Baptisms.
This has happened on more than one occasion, but I put it down to operator error.
I have today opened the census page and loaded it with my last Gedcom file.I have added to 1 individual, already on FH, 2 parents and 4 siblings, and entered their relevant data.I then save the file and close AS,I already have FH up and running and when going back into it I am missing the small box which tells me that the file has been updated and FH will restart. There is no sign of the added members of the family appearing on FH.
If i go back into AS and scroll through the names I find that all the new family members are there with ID no's,but have not been transferred to FH.
I have gone right out of both programmes then reopened them but no success.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

The most common reason for this is you are opening different copies of your Gedcom file in FH to that used in AS.
Double check the files are actually the same in the AS settings.

Jane's explanation is the only reason this could happen I think.

Well, thank you for your replies,i am now more confused than ever, when i leave either FH or AS i don't control what the backup files are called, when I am asked to open a gedcom file in AS i go to Windows Explorer where my FH backups are kept and download the last file, the same file I use to open FH,remember this,I have used both these programs up to now without any problem.
Can you tell me please if I can still download AS to use with Census only.
Thank you
Dave in Inskip.

Like I said, this is not an Ancestral Sources problem. Downloading an older version won't solve it, opening the correct file will.

This is why it isn't working! You shouldn't be opening backup files in Ancestral Sources. You need to be loading into Ancestral Sources the 'live' family history file that you use in Family Historian. If you make changes to a backup file then that's why you're not seeing changes in the file you use in FH.
In Family Historian, with your family history file opened go to the File menu and choose 'File Statistics'. Make a note of the 'File Name' entry (which is actually a file path). This is the file that you need to open in Ancestral Sources.
If you want to test that you are opening the correct file. Try adding a new person in Family Historian (you can always delete them later), then click Save and
without closing Family Historian open up the file in Ancestral Sources. If the new individual is there then you have opened the correct file, if they're not then you've opened the wrong file. Once you've made sure you have the correct file open in AS then I'd suggest you tick the 'Current File is default' (or Current Project is Default') entry under the File menu so that it always opens this file every time.

FYI: If by FH backup files you mean the .zip files created by FH Backup options, then AS cannot open them successfully at all.
If forced to open the .zip file then AS displays no Individuals.
If the .ged file within the .zip is opened in AS then it reports it as 'read only' and refuses to open it.
This is all perfectly correct behaviour.
So the problem must be as Nick & Jane say, that FH and AS are not opening the same .ged file.

Hello Nick, thank you for your excellent instructions on how to proceed,I printed them off, followed them to the letter and am now up and running, happy as the provberbial pig.
Hello Tatewise, and thank you for your input into this saga,no I don't use Zip files, since Winzip decided to charge me for the privilege of using their programme for approx 4 times a year.
I was cruising along with FH quite well until ver4 introduced the 'Project',this I never quite got my head round, and I continued to use the Gedcom file approach, which does allow me to save a couple of my last backups, however it looks like I am going to have to put my trust in FH and just have the one,as I do wish to continue with AS which I find a very usefull addition.
I will now return to my tree, which i am determined to be in charge of,not,as is the case at the moment,it in charge of me.
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes
Dave,Knowle Pad Farm.

Whether you use
Projects or standalone
GEDCOM the
Backup feature of FH lets you save as many backup copies as you like (which happen to be in .zip format).
See the
File > Backup/Restore command, and the
Tools > Preferences > Backup tab, and click the
Help button for more advice.
You do not need to use
Winzip on these
Backup.zip files because FH does the zipping and unzipping as part of the
Backup/Restore command.
If you need a compressed .zip file utility then
7-Zip is free from
http://www.7-zip.org and better than Winzip.
However, all recent versions of
Windows support compressed .zip files without needing any extra downloads.
See
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... zip-files# for details.
(Although this link is for Vista I believe XP and Windows 7 are the same)

Have you tried using the search feature in Windows Explorer to find where your two .ged files are located ?
Or
Open FH, load file then click on File>File Statistics. This should give you the path and file name used by FH.
Now open AS then click on Tools>View log Files. This will show the path and file name used by AS.
Obviously they should be exactly the same.
