Family Historian User Group

Having used FH since version 2.1 was new, I am trying Ancestral Sources for the first time today and have successfully entered everything I need into the 'Facts' section of each relevant 'Individual Record' in my FH project. So far, very, very good!

I like, however, to see each entry in full (as I have found various distant relatives as visitors and servants as beneficaries to wills etc) and until today have typed the infomation from each census return into a local note and linked that note to every individual mentioned. Two points have arisen at this stage on which I would welcome some help (which I have been unable to find on perusing tutorials and threads in the Forum):

1) How do I add an Unrelated Individual(eg domestic servants)? I have clicked on the relevant icon and completed the name & gender boxes but there appears no way to 'enter' that information. I therefore went to the 'Text - Auto' box into which I typed details of the extra people, and they were readily accepted.

2) How can I recover that full information from the 'Text - Auto' box and display it in FH(preferably as a 'linked note')? Should I have copied and pasted it into the 'Note' box? Where does that display?

Any help much appreciated!

1. I would guess that most people don't actually add the servants and visitors as individuals in their files unless they are part of the family tree. However, some people do.

• If you've added them to your file (using the Add Parent..., Add Child...,Add Unrelated..., etc.) then you can add them to the census entry by finding them in the list of all individuals in the usual way.
• If you don't want to add them to the file then you did it the right way - just type them into the source text at the bottom

2. The text is recorded in the source record 'text from source'. I think you'll find this knowledege base article useful to see where the data from Ancestral Sources goes in Family Historian. If you look at the facts recorded against an individual you'll see a census fact. Click on that and you'll see the source listed in the yellow area below. Click on that source and then on the yellow triangular arrow to see the source record. When you're looking at the source record click on View->Record Links to see the individual facts linked to this source.

Ancestral Source does offer numerous options to allow you to decide where to record the data, but I think most experienced FH users recommend the default option of recording the census transcription in the source text.

Thank you for a very prompt and helpful reply. Very simple when you know where to look!!

I now hope the winter lasts a while longer so I can convert the large number of census entries I already have using 'local note'!!

In view of my intended intensive use of AS, I would like to make a small donation towards the time and expense you have laid out on this great program. The 'Search' facility on the Forum has not explained how to do that (a serious omission!)- Can you tell me, please?
