Flags (Observation-suggestion)

Post by donone » 12 Feb 2012 10:55

I note that FH flags only appear as a choice in AS (when assigning flag names) if that flag has been assigned to at least one person in FH. If that flag is removed from that person then the flag disappears from the choice dialog in AS but the previous assignment does remain in the dialog window.

I may be unusual, but I set up the flags in advance in FH for Census, without actually assigning to any person. I intended then to enter information in the usual way and assign flags but did not get that far.
Then I found AS!

My new intention was to enter the Census information with AS and assign my shiny new flags only to find they were not in the list along with the others.

It would seem useful if those flags that been set up in FH but not assigned, could be visible.

I have not investigated whether any error will occur if...
deflagging the only person with that flag;
it disappears from the choices dialog in AS;
the reference that remains shown in the assignments is then used.
disappears

Worth making backups, etc. but should work if you call the flags the same thing in Ancestral Sources. Ancestral Sources doesn't know about your flags because they're not in your file!

It may be worth creating an Unrelated Individual named say A Flagholder and assign your Flags to him permanently.

Note that unassigned Flags are only retained by FH if their status is Always include this record flag in flag lists.
See Tools > Work with Lists and Flags > Flag Status.

These retained Flags are saved in the C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily HistorianFlagsFlags.fha plain text file, not in your GEDCOM file.

Thank you for that enlightenment. I did not realise they were not in the FH even though they appear every time I start up.

I thank you for the excellent suggestion of a dummy to hold flags.
Sorry to have bothered you through lack of reading.
