Hi, I have census records with two families on the same page, different households - i.e., each has a 'head' tho they may,or may not, have the exact same address.

Is it ok to enter the families in the same A.S. entry?  Should it be done that way?

If they are not related I would do two separate entries linked to the same multimedia. I put a note on to say so and so lived next door or was on the same page

If they are father and son you could do it as one entry.

In 1901 my grandparents were on the same page, aged 5 and 2, but my grandmother's family moved away and they did not meet until the Peace Tea after WW1.

I didn't think it appropriate to create one entry for both families.

Yes follow Irene's advice. When you link the image to the second entry you'll be linking an 'Existing Image' rather than a new one.

At the risk of confusing things, you may also encounter one family household split across two Census pages.

In that case you would still have only one Source Record, but it would link to both Multimedia Census page images.

But if they are related?

For instance, I have the father,mother and their two youngest children, and then on the same page, the eldest son, his wife, and their children - three gens on one page, listed as two households, one address.

Or, I have sisters at the same address - each of their husbands are listed as head, then their wives' names, then children. E.g.,
John Smith head
Ann -do- wife
Jane -do- dau
George Jones head
Mary -do- wife
Joseph -do- son

and they're at the same address, and the wives are sisters.

Separate entries, linked to the same multimedia, or one entry?

It's totally up to you. Personally I would ordinarily record each household as a separate source so I'd do the same for this.

Remember that there is also a source note (under the source text in AS) where you could note that the other family was living in the same household.

From a technical point of view whether you have two sources or one doesn't really make any difference in this case.

If there is more than one Head then you should find in the left-hand Column 1 a No. of Schedule that is different for each household, even if the Column 2 contains the same address.
You could even add the Schedule No. to the end of the Ref Id if you wish.

The earlier the Census the less likely that each house has a name or number. In those days there was no need, they all knew who lived where by name rather than address.
