I have just started to use AS but am struggling to be able to display both the census image from which I want to use info, and the AS screen which allows me to enter it. I put the setting at 'Tile Windows Horizontally', but AS takes a bigger proportion of the screen than my image which becomes impossible to read. I use Widows XP and view images from the Ancestry site. I do not download and save them first.
I am sure there is a simple solution to where I am going wrong, which I hope someone can help me with. I apologise in advance if this has an answer somewhere on the forum but I have not found it.

Have you downloaded AS 3. This now has a reduced minimum width which may help.

There are tutorials for AS in the Knowledge Base at Ancestral Sources Contents.
Among other features, these show how to use downloaded Census Image files.
There is also a lot of useful advice in the AS built-in Help.

It is recommended that the Census Image is linked to the Census Source Record.
AS has the Add/View Images option to support this technique.

So it is better to download the Census Image and save it first.
You could also print this image together with the Ancestry Transcript.
Then you could work from the printouts.

Alternatively, AS has options to keep the linked Census Image in a window on top of its main window.

However, if you only have a small/low resolution monitor screen then trying to view AS and an image at the same time is tricky.
That is why some users go for larger monitors or two monitors.

Many applications nowadays tend to expect a resolution of at least 1024 screenwidth but I've made a lot of effort to make it usable in 800x600 resolution.

I'd recommend having AS maximised. Link the image, then manually resize the image viewer in AS so that it goes across the bottom part of the screen. Use the 'Keep on top' tickbox so that you are able to see the image and also type into the census grid at the same time.

I appreciate that a lot has been done to cope with 800x600 resolution, but it is still awkward to use the Main Screen and Image Viewer windows at the same time.

With the Tools > Customise > Font set to the default Tahoma, Regular, 8 pt the Main Screen minimum size is 800x723 i.e. partly off screen. (With a larger Font it is bigger.)
manually resize the image viewer in AS so that it goes across the bottom part of the screen
The Image Viewer window minimum size is 797x621 which almost obscures the Main Screen when Keep on top is ticked.
Move the Image Viewer to the bottom of screen and most of it is off the bottom of the monitor screen making the scroll bars difficult to use.

Ideally the Main Screen should go down to 800x600 and the Image Viewer down to 800x200 so that its scroll bars remain visible.

I didn't at any point suggest it was possible to view the image viewer and main screen in 800x600 at the same time. I've made it possible to use Ancestral Sources in that mode but it will be awkward obviously. Anyone trying to use 800x600 with increased font size will clearly be on a hiding to nothing. Any PC bought in the last 10 years will have default resolutions far greater than 800x600.

Forgive me if I don't waste even more hours of my life completely redesigning the image viewer to work at a height of 200 pixels.

Sorry Nick, I withdraw what I said about needing 200 pixel high Image Viewer.

I completely forgot about the left-mouse-button image drag and the Magnify option, that both make the Image Viewer quite usable despite being half off the screen.
