AS source titles

Post by Dagwood » 20 Mar 2012 18:54

Whilst reviewing my sources under the Records window I notice I have quite a bit of variation in the format of the titles created whilst entering data from census' etc. I put this down to the fact that the title changes as data is enterd and I have to go back and delete duplicated years/names etc and I am not being consistent with my editing.
This raises two questions:
1. Can the title be fixed so that once entered it does not alter as further data is input?
2. After having been saved can the title be manually edited to a consistent format and what problems might this create?
I don't want to touch anything until I get expert advice as I have a long history of altering then regretting!
Thanks
Dagwood

1. If there are inconsistencies in the format of your census source titles it may be because you have sometimes saved the data without entering anything in one of the fields which are used in your source title template - for example you may have omitted the place or the reference number. Once the source has been created the title won't change unless you manually alter it.
You can set up the template for the title of your census sources in A.S. using Tools > Options > Census Settings Method 1. Have a look at the tutorial at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... _templates
for guidance.

2. Yes, titles can be manually edited after the sources have been created. This won't create any problems and should make it easier to locate a particular source if the titles are in a consistent format.

I entirely endorse everything that Lorna has said.

In addition, while making Source titles consistent, you may want to do the same to linked Multimedia titles, such that they mirror the Source titles.

Lorna and Mike, thanks for your replies. I think it comes down to my having established what I thought was an adquate title and then not noticing that creating a lengthy Reference would add the same data into the title. I'm taking more care now!
Your points about editing titles are noted
Thanks
