Data not going accross to Family Historian

The census data that I am inputting into Ancestral Sources is not being carried across to Family Historian. I have been saving it. If I check the AS backup file the data is there BUT it isn't being reflected in Family Historian.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Thanks

Did you have the FH program open while you were using Ancestral Sources? If so you will need to let FH re-load the gedcom file (you would have seen a messeage saying the file had been altered by another program and asking you if you want to re-load it).

If this is not the case then AS must have been modifying a different gedcom file from the one you are opening in FH. Do you have more than one version of the gedcom? Check carefully which file you have opened in AS.

FH was open when I was editing in AS. I did however tell AS to edit the FH project file not the gedcom that created the project file. I never got any warning message at all.

How do I tell which Gedcom file that AS was editing?

There is only one gedcom file within each project so if you told AS to open the correct FH project file then it must be editing the right gedcom.
Can you confirm that when you run FH you are opening the same project (from the project window) and not opening your original version of the gedcom in stand-alone gedcom mode?

Lorna

Yes there is only one project other than the sample one that I have created.

What I did was close the project and then re-open it and all the records are now there.

Very odd but now resolved.

Thank you for your help.

What is the name of the gedcom you are using for FH?

Where is it located?

What is the name of the gedcom you are using for AS?

Where is *it* located?

This type of thing has happened to me when I inadvertently had two identically named .geds in different directories.

AS and FH (and other programs for that matter) are written to recognise that the records have changed and offer a chance to reload with the new data or revert.
With me, if I add and save anything in AS swapping over to FH will prompt a pop-up saying so.

I strongly suspect that you've got two geds on the go.

If you are using FH5 then use Mike Tate's 'Ancestral Sources Data Entry' plugin to start AS.
This not only checks that your file has been saved first. but opens AS with the correct project, and on the person you had selected, It will also close AS on save for you.

Thanks for the suggestions I only have one gedcom on the go.

Totally at sea with the whole of FH it just doesn't seem to work logically and things that are easy to do in other programmes seem excessively complicated or impossible to achieve in FH.

AS seems like an excellent programme if only it wou;d work reliably with the flavours of gedcom for other Family Tree programmes.

Open FH. Click on File>Statistics.....
This will give you the Path and name of the file in use by FH.

Open AS. Click on Tools>View Log Files...
This will give you the Path and name of the file in use by AS.

They should be exactly the same.

You say you only have one .ged file, on the go, but have you unknowingly got two copies of it?

In FH under File dropdown menu click on File Statistics. A window will open and at the top it will display the file path of the .ged file FH is using.

Now in AS under Tools dropdown menu click on View Log Files, in the new window you will see the file path of the .ged file AS is using.

If the file paths are not identical FH and AS are using different .ged files. They must both use the same .ged file and that can only happen if the file path is exactly the same for both.

Keith

Thanks guys.

Yes it appears I am using two given your methods for identifying them.

I told FH to use the gedcom in a custom location when I set the project up. (On my D drive not C:my documents). I opened AS and told it to use the same project but it seems that it ignored the custom location of the project in FH and created a new one on my C drive.

How do I fix it which one do I move presumably the one that AS thinks and move it to my D drive.

Is this a bug in AS or did I do something stupid? I don't think I did I just told it to use the project NOT the gedcom.

Thanks

First you need to check whether you have two complete copies of your project, or just one copy of the project (in C:my documents) and one copy of the Gedcom alone (on D drive).
It may be that although your original gedcom file was on D drive the project was ceated by default in My Documents.

The project folder structure should look something like this:

Family Historian Projects (folder)
ProjectName (folder)
ProjectName.fh_data (folder)
Media (folder)
Plugin Data (folder)
ProjectName.ged
Public (folder)
ProjectName.fh_proj

If you only have the ProjectName.ged on the D drive you will need to copy the whole project to D drive. Once you are sure it is where you want it to be, delete the version in My Documents to avoid confusion. Then tell both AS and FH where the project now is (and make sure when you run FH that you tell it to open the PROJECT (navigate to it from the Project window in FH), don't just click on the gedcom file.

I hope that makes sense.

[cry][cry][cry]

Two identical structures on both drives exactly as your described Lorna.

What now?

OK, if FH is using the project on D drive you don't need to change that (assuming that's still the place you want your project to be). You can double-check this again in FH by clicking File> File Statistics. If it is pointing to the wrong one, use File > Project Window, click on 'Browse for Projects' and navigate to the project on D drive. Once you are sure it's right, you can use Tools> Preferences> Statup tab and under Default Startup File select 'Make current file the default'. Then FH will always open on this project.

Now in AS, use File > Open Project and click the Browse button to navigate to the project on D drive. (Just select the project name one level below the 'Family Historian Projects' folder), then click OK. Then use File> Current Project is default.

You might find that the project on D drive is not up to date, if AS has been editing the one in My Documents. But at this stage if you are still experimenting the best course might be to start again with what you now have on D drive, rather than try to combine bits of the two projects!

Once things seem to be working (and trust me, they will) delete the duplicate project in My Documents to avoid confusion in the future.

Good Luck, keep smiling

Thanks Lorna I'll give that a try.

I'll try and [smile] but in the current heat (34 in the shade) and these frustrations maybe not [wink]

As per my previous post.
If you launch AS using a plugin, you do not need to tell AS where the file is, The plugin will automatically open the file you were working on, wherever it is.
This is extremely handy if, like me, you have several unrelated projects. There is also no need to set a default project in AS.
