[Post updated for v3.2.3: 12 September 2012]

Thanks for your help and suggestions for this update. I've now released version 3.2.3 and this is available on the FHUG site as usual.

DownloadsChanges in v3.2.3
  • Changed the wording of a message box following suggestion from Steve Bye.
  • Added a trap to try to catch an error that Jane Frances reported when checking for new versions.
  • Removed a typo from the help file that I spotted
Changes in v3.2.2
  • Since version 3, the file paths where images are accessed have been remembered and recorded in a project options file. John Morrison pointed out that this didn't work well if the project was accessed on more than one computer, as the file paths used are likely to differ. Ancestral Sources will now remember these image paths for every computer that the project is used on. There is also a new screen to allow these settings to be removed for computers that are no longer being used.
  • The Save button on the Associated Individuals panel has now been retitled to Add (changes to Update when editing). This was prompted by suggestions in this forum thread.
Changes in v3.2.1
  • Chris pointed out in forum post below that the repository update in 3.2.0 didn't fully fix the problem - hopefully 3.2.1 does
Changes in v3.2.0
  • When selecting an existing image on the Images form, there is now a filter textbox to help to narrow down the search for an image title. Thanks to John Morrison for suggesting this.
  • Steve Bye reported a serious problem with Ancestral Sources, that has been there since v1.1. If the source entry type is changed while the file is loading it is possible for large numbers of sources to be lost. It shouldn't have been possible to change source type during a file load and this should now not be possible.
  • If a baptism entry was selected following a marriage entry, there was no option displayed to select the individual. Mike Tate reported this and it is now fixed.
  • Fixed a problem reported by 'Ed' on the FHUG forums where the Age is never recorded in residence or occupation events for marriage and baptism records, even if the appropriate option to do so is selected.
  • Made a few minor changes to the options screen to improve formatting errors.
  • Chris Michael and Gerry Newnham both reported that the word repository was incorrectly spelled on a warning message box and also that the warning reported no repository was selected, even if a new repository was specified. Both of these have been fixed.
  • An error was shown if a new individual was added with birth details and another individual had their name changed directly in the main panel. Thanks to Chris Michael for reporting this and it should now be fixed.
  • The What's New in this Version? link on the welcome page didn't work - it does now.

Thanks Chris - I thought I'd throroughly tested that but a last minute change broke it. Have now updated this post to link to version 3.2.1 which should fix this issue.

If you've used this for a while without problems please can you let me know that too? Once I am fairly confident it is OK I can advertise it and release it properly.

Thanks

Nick

I have been using the new version this morning to input about a dozen marriages and everything seems to be OK. Thanks for all your hard work.

(At one point I got a message about saving a person and thought I had found a problem. In fact it was AS reminding me that although I had entered the name of a witness I hadn't 'saved' the name. So thanks for that!

Just a thought - in that context would it be clearer if the button was labelled 'Add/Edit' - I realise there is a Tool Tip that says that but the action isn't a saving in the usual sense, is it?)

I think 'Confirm' would be better, as you don't use the button to Add.
I've not used 3.2.1 much yet, but no problems so far on 32 bit or 64 bit

I have put ~20 new individuals in using the census entry without issue.

....
But I think you are 'Adding' the name to the list of witnesses as clicking on the button moves the name up to the list box above and clears the form for another name. The button is is also used to Edit an entry by highlighting the name and then clicking on 'Save'. Or have I misunderstood what you said?

Yes I agree with that, but you add a person by choosing the individual, and then clicking on 'Select'. By clicking on 'Save', you are Confirming them into the list, as you are after an edit.

I agree that the title 'Save' is confusing, as I have also clicked on this to save the whole entry and got the error message.

I think I might agree with Gerry on this. Having the button say Save has always confused me a little. The button does add the individual in the Name field to the Associated Individuals box. Having the button be called Add or Add/Edit might be more clear I think.

Nick,

I just used AS to enter about 10 or 12 censuses and it seems to be working great for that.

Thanks again,

Bill

Holidays and watching the Olympics (on TV) meant that I took a break from developing AS for a few weeks. I am conscious that I’ve still not properly released this minor update v3.2.

Since version 3.2.1, Steve Bye pointed out a set of cicumstances where it might not be possible to select an individual for a baptism, following a marriage entry which I previously thought I’d fixed. Also a discussion on this thread prompted me to decide to rename the Save button on the Associated Individuals panel to Add.

I thought I’d been clever in version 3 by introducing a settings file that is saved into a project to allow Ancestral Sources to remember the folders where images for baptisms, marriage and census are stored and where the user copies those images from. By recording these on a per-project basis, rather than using the same settings for all projects on the computer it made life easier for people who use more than one project (e.g. me as I swap between test projects and my real project). However, John Morrison pointed out that this didn’t work if you regularly access the project on more than one computer as any file paths not in the Media folder are unlikely to apply to both machines. So I've changed the ways this works so AS should record these paths in the project settings file together with the name of the computer they apply to. I’m hopeful this will improve the situation for those who use AS on more than one computer. I’ve also added a dialogue to allow the user to remove all trace of settings for any computer that is no longer used to access the project.

I’ve now got another ‘Release Candidate’ v3.2.2 with these changes and I’ve renamed this forum thread and updated the first post to link to v3.2.2.

If I don’t get any reports of problems in the next week I’ll release it properly. Then I can carry on with the development of version 4!

Thanks for your help with this

Nick,
There is also a new screen to allow these settings to be removed for computers that are no longer being used.
For the life of me I can't figure out how to get to this new screen. Is the method only visible if we are using more than one computer? I am currently using only one computer. Could you explain how to get to this?

Thanks,

Bill

Nick

Now fixed.

From email sent to you on 19 July:
I entered a 1911 Census followed by a Marriage, when I got to the 'Further Info' tab 'RG14' was in the Ref ID box.

This is also fixed.

Yes that's right Bill - the menu item only appears if you have used AS 3.2.2 with the project on more than one computer.

Best wishes

Thanks Steve, you're quite right, that's another change since 3.2.1. Thanks for confirming it is fixed now.

Best wishes

Thanks everyone for all your help. I've now officially released version 3.2.3 and I've modified the first post in this thread to reflect this and to show the very minor changes since 3.2.2.

Thanks again

You are probably working on this as I speak, but the Ancestral Sources website also needs updating.
Then presumably the AS Help > Check for Updates will perform the update.
At present it says I already have the latest installed.  (I have V3.2.1 installed).

Hi Mike

Yes I got a bit of time late last night to finalise the install, get it uploaded, and create the downlaods, but didn't have time to create the news story on this site or update the other things you mention. I'll do those later when I get home from work.

Cheers

Nick

For those that are interested in this kind of thing, the previous version (3.1) was the first one where the number of people downloading the 64 bit version was very slightly higher than those who downloaded the 32 bit. All previous versions have had many more download the 32 bit version.
