Reintalling options

Hello

Does anyone know where AS keeps the 'Options' data. It doesn't seem to be amongst the 'Settings' etc. xml. I'm trying to reinstall with my old options. Thanks.

AS keeps its Tools > Options in the Windows Registry, so you need to use Tools > Backup/Restore A.S. Options which exports/imports the settings to/from the AS Backup Folder.

I wonder why AS doesn't store the options file routinely along with all the other xml. At least it's better than Outlook 2007 and later which stores all the email account details only in the registry but doesn't have any import/export facility!

It is because the registry is the ideal place to store this kind of information. Indeed it is why the registry is there! The information stored in the XML files is suited to a file format because these are not fixed data/value pairs. i.e. there could be any number of countries, census templates, auto-text formats or associated individuals.

The one downside with registry data is that it is less transparent to the user and more difficult to backup, hence providing the import/export functions.

Nick, there are pros and cons whichever way you do it. As you say, putting it in the registry potentially makes it harder to back up. As there is a import/export function, why not automatically write it out when the program closes? Anyway, it's no big thing and thanks for your very useful piece of software.
