Add New Parent

Post by neil40 » 30 Jul 2023 20:19

Hi Nick,

I consistently find that when adding a marriage, if a parent of the bride or groom isn't in my database, I can't add them via AS once I have added the bride and groom, as all the Edit>Add... items other than Unrelated Individual are greyed out/unavailable.
The help file states
If the individual or their parents are referred to in the marriage record but don't exist in your file then you should add them first using Add Parent, Add Spouse, Add Sibling, Add Child, or New Unrelated Individual.
, however, it is unclear where one should do this.
I find I have to back out of the addition, go to FH, add the parent(s) that way and then come back to add the marriage again.
Am I missing something? It isn't the same on Birth/Baptism entry, where the Edit>Add Parent items are active.

If you've added Individual A and Spouse B to a marriage and then realised you don't have parents for one (or both) of them and they are referred to in the marriage entry. Here's how you would add parents to Individual A:

1) Select Individual A on the right of the screen (the quick way to do this is to click the ID of the individual in the Main Info tab)
2) Click Add Parent... and then enter their name and gender and click OK.

They will then appear in the Parents tab.

Ah, thanks Nick
Yes, that makes sense. I've been going to the parents tab and wondering why the options were greyed out, having seemed the natural place to add them!

Years ago when I added support for baptism and birth sources to AS and allowed new individual and parents to be entered on the main screen I just found it so time-consuming and complex working through the various scenarios when coding it that I just couldn't face dealing with this for Marriages too so marriages require all the adding of new people to be done in the right-hand pane. I did always intend to work on this in the future, but I've not got round to it yet :)
