Testing is now complete. Ancestral Sources v7.7 released on 12th March

I'm aiming to release an update soon to fix a few issues and add a number of improvements. A number of you have been kind enough to help me to beta test new versions prior to release and I'd appreciate it if some of you would do so again.

New Features in v7.6.7 (Beta Test)

• In the 1921 England/Wales census (and other templates where age is given in years and months), Ancestral Sources will now allow an age in years with 0 months to be recorded. Ages with 0 months can now be suggested and also used to more accurately predict a birth date when creating birth facts. Thanks to Lorna Craig for suggesting this.
• There is now a facility to paste an image into the Image Viewer as an alternative to selecting an image in a file. This was a request made by an attendee during an Ancestral Sources demonstration to the FH7 Beginners Zoom group in December 2022.
• Text pasted into plain text source or note text with just a line feed without carriage return appeared concatenated on a single line. AS will now insert carriage returns in these circumstances.
• Updated various census templates to ensure that the relationship list was consistent and includes Boarder as requested by John Hanson.
• There were a couple of reports of error messages when using CTRL+C or CTRL+X in the census grid. I've not been able to reproduce this, but I've added in some code that might stop these appearing.
• Fixed an error that occurred when trying to save using the 'add images to existing sources' feature. Thanks to Paula Moulton for reporting this.
• Short titles will no longer be recorded if templated sources are used.
• The births and deaths dialog for non-census sources didn't always resize correctly when higher Windows scaling was used. This was reported by Graham (gsward) on the FHUG forums and should now work correctly.
• The ctrl+i shortcut to turn on italics wasn't working correctly when editing rich-text but is now.
• John Hanson pointed out that the ctrl+right/left cursor key shortcuts weren't working when editing rich-text. These should now behave as expected.
• Fixed an issue with the Add Individual option on the rich-text toolbar where instead of showing the spouse parents for a marriage entry it showed other individuals.

New Features in v7.6.8 (Beta Test)

• Lorna Craig reported that the v7.6.7 feature that calculates date of birth from 1921 census ages that include 0 months was a year out in its calculation. This is now fixed.
• I realised that users may think the new Paste image feature allows them to paste an image file rather than an image from the paste buffer. It is already possible to select a file or drag and drop a file but the paste button will now also allow an image file to be pasted into the Image Viewer.

New Features in v7.6.10 (Beta Test)

• Fixed some problems with the 'Add Images to Existing Source' feature of AS reported by John Elvin. The {SOURCETYPE} should now work when used in image title templates and also text boxes on the 'Edit Image Title Elements' form should now enable correctly if the template tags are used in shortened formats.
• There is now a filter that can be used with 'Add Images to Existing Source' that allows either a source ID or part of the source title to be searched for. This was requested by John Elvin and John Morrison

New Features in v7.6.11 (Beta Test)

• Since 2018, Windows has included a setting (off by default) to allow file names to be treated as case sensitive. AS will now take this possiblity into account when detecting whether a file is part of a project. Thanks to Kev Canning for reporting this.
• There is now a new autotext key word for individuals SN_ORIGINAL. This can be used where the maiden name of a woman needs to be displayed on a death or burial record and the Use last married name for deceased female option is selected. SN_ORIGINAL returns the same result as SN if the Use last married name option is not being used. This was added following a query from Chris Read and also John Elvin.
• Updated the 1969-2007 and 2007- England/Wales Death Certificate auto-text templates to incorporate the SN_ORIGINAL keyword to correctly display the maiden name of a deceased woman and also to incorporate the name and occupation of the husband or wife of the deceased. This was based on a suggestion from John Elvin.
• Two additional options requested by John Rosser have been added to the marriage type drop-down: By Publication and By Declaration
• If any repositories are bookmarked in Family Historian then the repositories dialogue in Ancestral Sources will display a bookmarks check box to allow a choice from a reduced list of repositories. This was requested by John Rosser.
• Teresa Eckford reported a scaling issue with the Birth/Death from Entries dialogue and a change has been made which may help with this.

New Features in v7.6.12 (Beta Test)

• There is now a new 'Tree View' mode which can be activated when viewing an individual that has children which displays a descendant tree for the chosen person. Individuals can be selected from that tree rather than using the separate list boxes on the right side of the screen. When in census mode, check boxes are displayed next to the people in the tree and multiple people can be ticked and added to the census entry with the click of a button.There is a new setting on the options screen that can be used to choose where on the main screen the Tree View panel will be displayed.
• If the optional Windows setting to allow file names to be treated as case sensitive (see 7.6.11 update) is being used on the folder that stores log files, Ancestral Sources will now handle the log file names correctly. Thanks to Kev Canning for reporting this problem.

New Features in v7.6.13 (Beta Test)

• The Tree View will now show a Spouse button if an individual selected in the tree has a spouse recorded. Clicking this button will display the spouses and allow them to be selected or ticked if a census entry is being made.
• The context menu that is displayed when right-clicking on a Tree View individual now includes the Change Name option as well as the add parent/spouse/sibling/child options that were already available.
• I fixed a problem with the Tree View where it appeared blank if the same individual was selected after saving a source. Thanks to Lorna Craig and others for reporting this.
• I fixed a problem with the Tree View where it didn't resize correctly if docked in the top or bottom left panels and the form was resized.
• Changed the names of the title templates as displayed on the Options screen based on suggestions from Colin McDonald.
• Richard Hyland reported a strange error message related to the image viewer. I don't know what caused this but have added some code so the error message shouldn't show again.
• An error could occur when saving a pasted image into a folder that already contained a file with the same specified name. The usual code to add a number on the end of the file name in these circumstances wasn't working correctly. This is now fixed - thanks to David Cooper for reporting this.

You may get warnings about the download not being commonly downloaded and you may need to confirm you definitely want to install it. Based on previous experience this should eventually stop happening once this new version of AS gets more downloads.

I tested last night and all went as expected, however:

a) Even though I ticked the "keep on top" box for the image, once I clicked onto the main page, the box unticked itself and the image disappeared - I had to Alt-Tab to bring it back. The first time it happened I thought I'd just forgotten that step, but paid close attention the second time, and it definitely doesn't seem to be sticking right now

b) I tried to paste an image into the Image Viewer, but nothing worked...how should it work?

Example: in the Sample Project select George Dowling , ID [60].
Create a 1921 census entry for him in AS, entering his age as 30y 0m. His birth date should be calculated as June 1891. In fact AS calculates it as June 1890.

(Other months work OK. For example set his age as 30y 1m and AS correctly calculates the birth date as May 1891.)

a) I've tried various different combinations of options but the keep on top stays ticked for me. It does temporarily untick when saving the image (otherwise the dialog boxes would be hidden behind the image viewer) but following that it ticks again. Can you try to carefully describe each steps you're carrying out between ticking the box and it becoming unticked?

b) If you have an image in the paste buffer (e.g. copied from the Snipping Tool in Windows) then a Paste Image button will appear next to the Select File button. The key point here is that this is an image rather than an image file. Thinking about this I can see that someone might imagine they could copy and paste an image file so perhaps I should allow that too Loading image files is already catered for by dragging and dropping into the viewer or clicking the Select File button. This new feature is quite different because it ends up generating a new jpeg file from the pasted image.

Oh dear. This wasn't a straightforward change to implement and I think in my testing I very much focussed on making sure it chose the correct month, assuming the year calculation would just work! . This will be fixed in the next version!

Not to worry Nick, thanks for your work on this. You are ahead of CP. FH is supposed to display an exclamation mark in the Property box if an age is recorded (against a fact) which is incompatible with the recorded birth date. But the FH calculation ignores the months so doesn't display the exclamation mark if the number of months is inconsistent. It only displays the mark if the number of years is wrong. I've told them about this and it's been 'referred to the developers for investigation'.

After entering another item this evening, I can report that my first issue was a simple user error - forgetting to tick the "always on top" box BEFORE saving

So, I looked for the Past button and found it, but when I tried to save the image after naming it, I received the error message pictured below. Again, probably user error, but not sure of what I did wrong. When I clicked Save, it opened the File Save window, I chose a folder, but instead of Save, it said Open. Not if that's what's supposed to happen or not.

Others might have the same problem, so I figured I'd better mention it.

ETA - I think I know what I did wrong, chose a file name instead of a folder. Long day of cataloguing at work, so not thinking things through. Will try again tomorrow and see if that theory is correct.

v7.6.10 Working OK for me thus far.

[EDIT] Spoke too soon! I've just noticed it is not creating a short title for my census entries. [/EDIT]

One thing I keep meaning to ask regarding the Image viewer. I have the following options selected: Link existing image already in the file, Show image title, and Only show images with relevant titles or paths. Immediately following that and before the list of images is a checkbox for Filter and a text entry field. I make frequent use of this filter but, despite goodness knows how many entries, I am STILL forgetting to tick the checkbox before I try to type in the filter taxt entry field (which of course you can't do - the checkbox has to be ticked first).

Would it be possible to enable direct entry into the Filter text field without first having to tick its checkbox?

Fair enough. In which case then, it is working for me.

I have been using AS 7.6.8 to enter information from the 1939 Register.

Having entered the information into AS, when I save the information I get the screen asking if I wanted to update birth information previously entered (outside AS). I have selected (variously) no change, update birth place only, update birth date only and update birth place and date.

Returning to FH, I find that the Register information has been entered correctly but the birth information has not been updated.

Is this a fault or am I missing something? I am running FH 7.0.18.

It works fine for me and I expect there would have been a lot of people letting me know if something as fundamental as this stopped working. Presumably from what you're saying you must have the option "Offer to create birth facts...even if existing birth includes place and date" under the Tools->Options->Census Settings?

No, I have just tested it without that ticked and it still seems to work as expected. I have no idea why this wouldn't be working for you. Can you put some screenshots in showing in AS what you are entering for the date of birth and place and then a screenshot in FH after it has loaded showing the list of facts for the individual.

Not sure if this is related to the file name case sensitivity issue, but AS Logs don't appear to be working correctly for me. Logs are being put into the correct folder as stated in Tools>Options>General Settings BUT

- They are no longer containing 200 entries or 1Mb. They are now 1 entry and are 2Kb
