Space before name in Census Conversion causes column shift

Nick, I mentioned this before in one of the test threads but haven't seen mention of it in release notes or a comment, so may have been missed by me or you, so mentioning it explicitly here.

A space before the individual's name causes the census columns to shift right by one column. I gave the circumstances in the thread, but it was a single case that was unusual, but as I said, probably not the behaviour you wanted. IIRC it occurred due to having a surname and no given name, and a space was added/prefixed automatically by (I assume, as I always used it) AS. I tested it out and it is repeatable and fixable simply by adding/removing a space before a name in an existing census transcript (pre-conversion).

Hi Chris

I don't find that adding a space before a name creates this problem but does if 2 spaces are added. I've made a minor change for the next version that will improve this. However, it isn't always possible for AS to get this right, which is partly as a result of the fact that AS doesn't ask you to specify the column separator used and tries to deal with various formats. If this kind of thing does happen then remember that one option is to click on the 'Original Source Text' tab, edit the text manually (e.g to remove an extra space) and then press the SC (Source Convert) button to see if it converts it with greater success.

Cheers

Nick

It wasn't a major problem to me, as it was only one case out of hundreds of census conversions, and I figured out (at least I though I had) what was happening quite quickly. I just wanted you to be aware of it in case there was an underlying issue that you'd want to tidy up for satisfaction :D

Cheers, AS seems to be gradually evolving to be quite capable. Keep up the good work.
