AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
I am preparing AS 7.3.3 and FH 6 to migrate from old laptop Win 8.1 to new laptop running Win 11.
I have run the backup AS from Tools but noticed that the only version I could download onto my new laptop was 7.5. I then tried to update my old laptop to 7.5 so I could rerun the AS Backup to copy the folder across. I got this error message:
Error checking for update. The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.
I am not sure how to resolve this or even if I do need to update AS on the old PC and then copy those files across. Help appreciated.

I'm not sure why you're getting that error, perhaps you have something on your PC blocking it. But not to worry, you can always download it from the Knowledge Base. Ancestral Sources Download.
Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
Thanks, Nick.
At the very worst if the settings don't go over ok then I can have the two versions up side by side and make changes that I can.
As a matter of interest I found this on the internet, not that it really means much to me

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
Windows 8 (and Windows 7) are not getting Microsoft updates (including updates to network software) that Windows 10 and 11 are getting, so they're increasingly unable to communicate with newer servers on the internet. (I suspect but don't know that this might also be the root cause of FH upgrade errors on W7 and W8).

Yes that sounds quite likely to me.ColeValleyGirl wrote: ↑27 Nov 2022 10:34Windows 8 (and Windows 7) are not getting Microsoft updates (including updates to network software) that Windows 10 and 11 are getting, so they're increasingly unable to communicate with newer servers on the internet. .
The link you found wasn't really relevant as AS uses .Net Framework 4.8. Just to point out that the 'check for updates' will direct you to the same knowledge base page I linked to above. If you download the latest version of AS from that page and install it, it will upgrade an existing version on the computer.

Liz, not directly related to the AS issue but have you seen the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide advice?

Nick. Will it make any difference if I have run the backup in the old version on my source laptop and then use those folders to overwrite the folders created by the 7.5 version on my new "target" laptop?

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
Sorry to butt in, but in my opinion, the best approach is to install AS 7.3.3 and FH 6 on the new PC and migrate all settings, backups, etc, for those versions. That is the FHUG Knowledge Base advice, because you are familiar with how those products work which makes it easier to check the migration has succeeded.
Then upgrade to AS 7.5 or 7.6 and FH 7.0.
If Nick cannot supply one, I have a copy of the AS 7.3.3 installation EXE for both 32-bit & 64-bit.

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
I disagree with that (with regards to AS). I would never want anyone to install an old version of AS which I know contains errors and bugs that have been solved by more recent versions. Upgrading the version on the old PC to the latest version would be a better solution than that and then backing up the settings afterwards. But as I said it probably doesn't make much difference.
Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
Mike, thank you, yes I am following the article. I have it open on my new laptop whilst I do the necessary on my old laptop.
Now I am torn in two about the AS upgrade!

Helen, yes it has come to the end of it's useful life. I am not even sure it would update to Win 10 and reluctant to try until I have moved everything over to the new laptop. it is lovely having the two next to each other both being able to be on the internet!!

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
If Nick is happy with the backups from AS 7.3.3 being restored into AS 7.5 then that is fine.
I was just concerned about any custom templates defined in AS 7.3.3 and how they get restored into AS 7.5 without upsetting all the new AS 7.5 templates. Whereas, usually you would start from AS 7.3.3 with its templates and update to AS 7.5 which has options to deal with conflicting templates. They same goes for the Tools > Options settings but probable less of an issue.
I was only suggesting AS 7.3.3 be installed briefly and not permanently as the point about bug fixes is valid, although Liz has been living with those bugs up until now.

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
No need to be torn in two, I'd just upgrade it on your current PC first (and run it) - it only take a minute to do (you asked if it was necessary and I said probably not, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it). If you've not made any changes to the templates in AS then there's no need to bother copying the Documents\Ancestral Sources folder over to the new PC.

In the OP Liz said she had difficulties installing AS 7.5 on the old PC. Has that been resolved?

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
I don't think she had tried to install 7.5 on the old PC. She had found that the 'check for updates' showed an error message and I provided her with the URL to go to so she could download the file to upgrade it.
Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
To clarify: I backed up the old settings in AS on my old (source) laptop. I went to download AS on the new (target) laptop but couldn't get 7.3, only 7.5. I thought I would try updating on the source laptop and then got the error message. I have downloaded 7.5 on the target laptop and overwritten the AS folder with the backup of AS 7.3 from my old (source) laptop but if Nick is advising to upgrade on my source laptop first then I guess that is the way to go and I will uninstall V5 pn my target laptop and redownload so I get the folders back that it installs.
Nick. It was a long time ago that I got it and know I made a change because I am a splitter so use method 1. There might have been one or two other minor tick boxes but am not aware of changing templates.
1. If I download and run AS 7.5 will it overwrite any little changes or do I need to take a copy of the backup onto a pendrive? If so then do I need to overwrite to7.5 folders?
2. Do I need to do a lot of testing as I am aware that time is running out for Microsoft updates are only until Jan 10th on the source laptop? Bad health has meant I have not used FH or AS for over a year and just getting to the point where I can manage to sit at the laptop for a couple of hours at a time.

Re: AS 7.3.3 update to latest version
If you simply delete the Ancestral Sources folder in your documents folder on your new laptop (with AS not running at the time) then it should get recreated when AS next runs. That's probably the best thing to do if you've not modified the templates.
The only reason to do any testing is to check that you're happy with the settings that you're using in AS and that they produce the results you're expecting when you view the data in FH.
AS won't change any settings you've made when you update with a new version.1. If I download and run AS 7.5 will it overwrite any little changes or do I need to take a copy of the backup onto a pendrive? If so then do I need to overwrite to7.5 folders?
