I've quickly done a half dozen conversions, all of which required a row removal with blank columns. None gave me any problems, so it looks like problem solved. ThanksColin McDonald reported that deleting rows from the rich-text table can sometimes produce strange results. I'm hoping this is now working correctly within the limitations of the rich-text control I'm forced to use.

Didn't spot the update release as I rely on notifications to get me to check the forum. Anyone else not getting them the last couple of days?
The blank occupation shifting birth location right seems to be fixed after doing a quick check.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Ok, spoke too soon.
The third one I tried happened to have mostly unrelated (not in file) people and a relative as a lodger. One of the unrelated entries was a 3d old, and only had the surname, no given name (probably not decided on at that point) nor relation to head of family (so sex not recorded). The whole entry was shunted right by one column.
I investigated and noticed that there was a space before the surname (probably due to AS putting in a space by default between the non-existant given name and the surname) and if I removed it (in FH source text) the shunting went away. If I put it back, they shunted over again. I experimented further and if you start any name with a space (unrelated or related) then there is shunting right of the column contents by one column.
Easy enough to fix in the census source, but probably not what you intended to happen.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Hi.
Trying AS for first time ...
Browsing to open my .ged file, it does not seem to recognise my mapped drive - I have a NAS which I map as F: (using \\NetworkDrive\Genealogy\).
I would expect to find my data at F:\FH\, but there is no F:\
I have to enter \\NetworkDrive\Genealogy\FH by hand.
Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Are you using a Project in Family Historian? If so then use the 'Open FH Project' option rather than 'Open GEDCOM file'. If you're not using a project then why not?
Ancestral Sources just uses the standard Windows file dialogue so I'm not sure why your drive wouldn't be showing. Which version of Windows are you using? Are you looking under 'This PC'?
Once you've opened the project/file if you select 'Make Current Project Default' from the File menu then you won't have to select it each time.
If you've not already seen it there is an Ancestral Sources Introduction video in the Ancestral Sources YouTube Channel.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
I have noticed that some programs with an option to launch after installation cannot recognise mapped drives during install.
I always have to remember to untick the launch option during install.
When run next time the mapped drives can be seen.
This seems to apply to both FH and AS, but I think it is actually a bug in Windows.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Nick,
On the Source Convert screen, if I make a change in the upper grid and then click in the lower grid, the Fit button disappears and then no further changes are allowed in the upper grid. Is this working as expected? I keep forgetting to click the Fit button before clicking.
Thanks,
Bill

Yes, I'm using a FH project ...
Yes, I'm looking under 'This PC', and I'm using Windows 10 Pro v21H2.
Mapped drive not appearing is a minor annoyance, not a show-stopper, but thought you might like to know!

You could try uninstalling and then installing by right-clicking on the AS setup program and choosing Run as Administrator.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
JohnCulley,
Please see my post about mapped drives.
It is only during install that AS cannot see mapped drives, so untick the "Launch Ancestral Sources" option if you choose to re--install.
When 1st run AS can then see your mapped drives (I run all my FH projects on Drive R: on all my computers. Makes life easier.)

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
You shouldn't find the Fit button disappearing unless you click in the lower Rich Text source text and change something (e.g. type a letter or move a column). If you make a change to the text then the Auto checkbox will un-tick and the Fit button will disappear because AS now assumes you are editing manually so don't want to use Auto-text as this would lose any edits you make. However, if you've accidentally done this and want to revert back to auto-text, just click the auto checkbox again and the Fit button will reappear.BillH wrote: ↑13 Nov 2022 22:35Nick,

Thanks for letting me know John. As a matter of interest, before you reinstalled it, had you tried running AS again to see if the drives were missing just the first time you had run it at the end of install as John suggested?JohnCulley wrote: ↑14 Nov 2022 15:03Thanks!

If I make a change in the upper unconverted grid (such as a name change) and then click anywhere on the lower Rich Text Version tab, the Fit button is disappearing and the Auto checkbox is getting un-ticked. I am making no changes on the Original Source Text (Converted from Rich) tab or the Rich Text Version tab.NickWalker wrote: ↑14 Nov 2022 19:48You shouldn't find the Fit button disappearing unless you click in the lower Rich Text source text and change something (e.g. type a letter or move a column). Before the reinstall, AS never had any mapped drives in 'browse', even after reboot - I tried many times!NickWalker wrote: ↑14 Nov 2022 19:53Thanks for letting me know John. Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.2
I've released another minor update and updated the first post in this thread to reflect that.
Changes in v7.6.2 (Beta Test)
The 32 bit version is available to test here: Ancestral Sources v7.6.2 32 Bit
Please report in this thread any issues you spot or email me (nick at ancestralsources dot com).
Changes in v7.6.2 (Beta Test)
- Fixed an issue reported by Bill Henshaw on the census source conversion screen where the rich-text box occasionally wrongly assumed a manual edit had taken place and turned off auto-text.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.2
Nick,
I can confirm that v7.6.2 does fix the problem with clicking in the lower pane. Thanks!
I have run across another issue.
For the 1950 USA Census it is creating the individual link in the wrong column. Instead of putting it in on the names in the Name column, it is putting it on the value in the Street Name column.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.2
Technically that's not an error as AS is behaving as designed. It doesn't know which column contains the name so it chooses the first column that contains the word 'name' (in this case, street name). The * in the column indicates the column it thinks is the name column. You need to right-click the column header of the column that actually contains the name and choose 'Set as Name Column'. However, I do think AS could do a better job of working out which is the name column so I'll see what can be done about that. Incidentally, the 1950 template in AS (in common with other census templates such as those for the UK) doesn't include the street name as that is recorded in the Address field instead, so this issue wouldn't occur with the standard templates.

Nick,
Thanks for the explanation. I should have looked in the Help file before posting. I read it awhile back, but had forgotten about this.

Hi Bill. v7.6.3 should hopefully improve this, let me know if it doesn't. I'm hoping to be able to release this 'to the public' soon which is why I've released this new test version so quickly so it gets a chance to be tested before release.

Nick,
v7.6.3 does now identify the "Name" column as the place to put the links rather than the "Street Name" column.
Thanks for the quick "fix".

- On the source conversion screen, if things go wrong when saving the file this should now be handled better. This change was inspired by a problem reported by John Morrison.
- Colin Spencer reported a problem when running 7.6.3 on Crossover for Mac. I don't know why the error would appear and assume it is a Crossover issue, but I've trapped the error so hopefully it won't appear in future.

A little anomaly in 7.6.4 in a Win 10 VM.
If you enter a Note before you do Auto Text you get a warning that it will overwrite an existing entry when there is nothing there.
