Census Template 1861 Scotland

Post by ColinMc »

I've just noticed that my 1861 Scottish Template shows the wrong date (8th April) instead of the correct date the 7th (I know there is some debate about whether it should be the first day or the second since it is recorded at midnight, but all other AS templates use day 1). Both ScotlandsPeople & The National Archives web sites list the census date as 7th April. The English Template does use 7th.

Since I have a number of census entries inside FH showing the correct date of the 7th, as well as quite a few showing the 8th, I fully expect that this is an error caused by me at some stage.

However on checking the settings.xml file in the programs directory, it does show 8th April. That does make me wonder if the original may be incorrect.

Can someone check their settings and see what date they have?

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin,

Mine defaults to 8 APR 1861 and I have not made any amendments or changes, so I would guess this is the template default. The English 1861 Census defaults to 7 APR 1861. I'm on AS Version 7.3.3

If this isn't the date you want to record, are you aware you can change the template? In AS, use Tools > Census Templates, select the right region and year, and change the date. Apologies if you already know this.

I'm glad you spotted this Colin. I've just checked and I had about 45 Scottish 1861 census facts dated 8 April!

I hope you know the Search and Replace plugin can change that Date just on Census events to apply that correction.

Yes but remember you might need to alter residence and occupation facts as well

I don't have any Scottish census entries in my own family tree and for the Scotland templates that I included in AS v7 onwards I think I just included the ones from the Knowledge Base which have the date as 8th April 1861. I can't remember who uploaded those templates, but I expect they've been there for many years! I'll modify the date for the next version of AS.
