How to add a census
Hello, could someone kindly point me in the right direction : I normally use Ancestral Sources to add sources, but now I just want to add a Denmark Census eg. 1880 Census of Denmark [Folketælling], Viborg Amt [County], Nørlyng Herred [Hundred], Asmild Sogn [Parish], Lobe [Schedule] 2, Dwelling 5, Johan Peter Jørgensen household; digital image, Rigsarkivet (https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/bill ... 2,11924598 : accessed 26 January 2022)
What's the best way to do that please?

Kai,
If it was me, I would build a census template for the 1880 Denmark census in Ancestral Sources and then use that. Building a census template is pretty straight forward and you can use an existing template as a guide.

Re: How to add a census
Bill, yes I was thinking the same and now I'm starting to research how to start but I'll take your advice on modifying an existing template
Having said that, FH would have been designed so censuses could be entered and cited independently of AS but looking around I got quite bogged down in descriptions of Data Entry Assistants etc.
I couldn't find much by way of FH7 how-to videos on Youtube though there are plenty for FH's competitors.
thanks,
Kai

There isn't a DEA that would help you with Danish censuses (yet). It wouldn't be impossible to modify the UK Census DEA to create a Danish one, but if you're not familiar with Lua, it might be a step too far for you.Kai Chandler wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022 18:06Having said that, FH would have been designed so censuses could be entered and cited independently of AS but looking around I got quite bogged down in descriptions of Data Entry Assistants etc.

Re: How to add a census
I wouldn't modify an existing template. What I would do is to go into the Census Template Editor in AS and select a template which is close to what you want and export it using the button at the bottom of the window. I would then rename it to reflect that it is for 1880 for Denmark. Then I would import it back into AS and make changes to it.
I have created templates for Norway that are available in the knowledge base. I am not familiar with Denmark, but one of those might be a good starting point for the 1880 Denmark census instead of exporting one from AS. You could download one and have a look at it. If it is a good starting point, rename it, and then import it into AS and make changes to it as needed.
The Norway templates are located at Ancestral Sources Template ~ Census Norway 1801-1910; others are at Download Type: Templates (Ancestral Sources)
Be sure and look through the knowledge base as there is a lot of good information there.
Personally, I don't use DEA's so can't help you there if that is what you want to use. I like AS, so I use it for all my censuses and some other sources as well.

Re: How to add a census
Another way to do this once you've selected an existing template is to click the copy button (to make a copy of the entire census structure) and then at the top type Denmark into the Region box and 1880 into the Year or Description box and click New and then click the Paste button.I wouldn't modify an existing template. Nick,
I figured there was probably a better and quicker way to do it.

Re: How to add a census
Many thanks to Helen, Bill and Nick - I was thinking I'd have to do the editing with Notepad but I'm impressed to see it can all be done in AS. (Nick - I just made a small donation to thank you for your continuing development and support
.)

Re: How to add a census
Kai, since this is a purely AS discussion, I have moved it to the Ancestral Sources forum.
Since you say you will "post any other questions in the appropriate forum" please post the question you asked in a new thread in the FH General Usage forum, and delete the question from this thread. Thank you
