Printing Census template in Family Group report

Post by Susan_Needham » 22 May 2021 08:38

Hi, I have recently come back to using FH and now have templates to fill in the Census reports for UK. Found this a much easier way of inputting the information. Just completed the 1901 UK census for a family but when I want the source to be included in a family Group report, it doesn't fit on even a landscape A4. Is there anyway around this or do I have to go back to manually entering the data again??

This is a known problem without a solution yet. See ...
Census templates in a Book (19155)
Narrative Report Source Text Table issues (19079)
Wide Tables (18780)
and I suspect others ...

You don't have to manually enter the data, just don't use the rich text tables.

Thank you, I did look through the forum subjects but failed to see these posts. Thank you for pointing them out. Hope they come up with a solution in the next update.

Unfortunately, there is no magic way of fitting a quart into a pint pot...

The first step is to measure up how much space is available in your preferred report format for the output. Typically, this would be about 15 cm width for portrait, and about 20 cm for landscape. Then use your word processor to mock up what you want the report to look like. How many columns can you fit in with a readable font size? When you have a format that you are happy with, see if you can replicate this in the FH templates.

If printed output is important to you, it is a good idea to use the same font for formatting the table in the Rich Text window as used for printing. Different fonts have different character widths, so line breaks can be very different on screen and in print. Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the default Rich Text font without also changing the appearance of the Property Box, so you may have to change it manually each time (or set it in your templates).

I rotate all census images andafter doing a narrative report, saving in RTF then again in Word and use my cursor to make image larger covering a full page A4 thus making them readable.

Ancestral Sources makes it easier to create a rich text census table that takes up less space because it has functions to automatically fit the column widths to the text but ultimately, as has been pointed out, the current limitations of Family Historian reporting means that wider tables will not fit. I did suggest during the testing stage for FH7 that it could include options to split a wide table into separate tables and I still hope this will happen in a later update. It seems to me that it would be reasonably easy to implement (but I may be wrong).

Best wishes
