Ancestral Sources version number

Post by tatewise »

Nick, you have just advised a user that AS v7.2.7 is the latest version from the FHUG KB page, which is true.

In Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin for multi-installed AS (19021) you advised that the XML page at https://ancestral.fhug.org.uk/version/update.xml would identify the latest version but that says v7.2.4

My plugin uses the https://fhug.org.uk/kb/link/ancestral-sources/ FHUG KB page but that now omits the 3rd version digit and only says v7.2 so my plugin will not advise users to update until AS reaches v7.3.

The Ancestral Sources > Help > Check For Updates... command says my installed v7.2.4 is the latest.

I find that all rather confusing!

I updated the download to 7.2.7 at the weekend and I was just waiting a few days to check there wasn't any sudden flurry of issues reported with version 7.2.7 before triggering all the existing users to update. The 3rd digit is just a minor revision and I have sometimes released several minor revisions in one week so I don't want current users to constantly be updating, particularly if a revision hasn't been tested enough so I'm glad your plugin isn't telling them currently. When I feel confident that an update is OK and I'm unlikely to be releasing another one soon after then I trigger the message to existing users. The fact that your plugin has it's own mechanism for doing the same thing is what causes confusion, but if it used the same mechanism as AS then the confusion would disappear!

Is the explanation the same for the intervening versions v7.2.5 and v7.2.6 ?

Is the mechanism that AS uses the XML page at https://ancestral.fhug.org.uk/version/update.xml ?

Maybe I should have realised but when you posted in the other thread it did not register with me that the XML page is what triggers the Ancestral Sources Help > Check For Updates... command to say there is a new version.
Now knowing that I am more tempted to adjust my plugin to use that XML page.

Yes that XML file is what AS uses (and has always used). Every so often it looks at the XML file to see if there is a new version. And yes the explanation is the same for all minor revisions - I don't want to 'over advertise' a minor revision - users are not getting features they might get excited about - they are generally just bug fixes (although sometimes they're very welcome!). I don't think v7.2.5 or 7.2.6 even made it to the KB download page - in some cases I've just posted them into forum posts where people have reported an issue. It takes me about 10 minutes work to compile, package and upload it whereas if I then needed each time to update version histories and links on the knowledge base, update that XML file, etc. it all takes a lot longer and makes me less inclined to update regularly.
