Shared Notes
Hi
I have been using this for a while but only just spotted this and can't find solution.
I use Method 2. When I create a census and save the transcript as a Shared Note, I can see it fine in Shared Notes but notice that it doesn't add it to the Individuals Notes tab and I have to do it manually afterwards, which I find strange.
Is this normal behavior, or have i missed a setting somewhere?
Thanks

Re: Shared Notes
Unfortunately, the FH support for Shared Notes attached to most entities is less than ideal.
Apart from Shared Notes attached to the whole record they are not shown on the Notes tab of the Property Box.
They are also not shown on the Notes tab of the Citation Window for either Citations or Source records.
You will find them, if you know where to look, on the All tab of the Property Box.
i.e. Expand the entry for the Fact and its Source Citation and the linked Shared Note will be there.
I think Shared Notes attached to Citations are included in Reports.
So if you duplicate the Shared Note in the Notes tab for the whole record, then it may appear in Reports twice; once in the body of the Report with other Notes; and under the later Sources section.
May I suggest you report the problem to Calico Pie via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php

That is less than ideal, and I will report.
I know you have done several Plug-ins, do you think this is some thing that could be done via a Plug-in?
Basically taking a Shared Note ID and adding it to a defined group of Individuals? So after anyone had added a Census or other fact via AS, they could run that to add to the Individuals.

Re: Shared Notes
Paul, I am not sure that such a Plugin is a good solution.
As I said, it duplicates the Note that is already attached to the Citation, so may appear twice in Reports and one will be out of context dissociated from the Census details.
IMO the better solution is to use Method 1 'splitter' Source Citations, especially for Census records.
Why is that not attractive to you?

Re: Shared Notes
There's a Plugin called MultiNote which I have in draft at present. It's intended as part of the V7 replacement for Research Planner, to allow attaching multiple Research Notes to one or more individuals (to create a research plan), but will also handle attaching one or more Shared Notes to multiple Individuals; and optionally creating the notes from autotext.
However, I agree with Mike T that it may not be the right solution for your need.

Method 1 just doesn't sit well with me, and I see it as cumbersome. To me, for example, the 1841 Census is a Source and a Citation shows where within that source to find my evidence. Just how my brain works i suppose.
Helen - Thanks

Re: Shared Notes
Have you reviewed the FHUG Knowledge Base article on Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2.
The problem I have with Method 2, particularly with Census records, is the number of replicated Citations all holding the same details, images, etc, which is contrary to a good database design that should only have single copies of data.
Not only does each household member's Census event have the same Citation but also each Occupation and maybe Birth event as well.
From a different perspective, how do you discover all the members of one Census household?
With Method 1 it is easy. From any fact with the Census Source record use View > Citations to Source Record...
With Method 1 all the reference details, transcript, image, etc, are all in one record, just like all the details of one person are all in one record.
Similar considerations apply to BMD Certificates, Parish Register entries, etc, but that is just my point of view and we all are different.

Re: Shared Notes
The problem is that that isn't what you're doing. If you were just using the citation to to show where within the source to find your evidence then that would be OK. But what you're actually doing is also transcribing the record - at that stage using Method 1 is very definitely the best way to do it and what I've always recommended. Method 1 is the default for that reason.
The only way that Method 2 can in any way mitigate some of the data duplication problems with transcriptions that Mike has mentioned is to use shared notes as you have, but it appears that FH7 is hiding those notes away rather than showing them. When you add a note in the Source/Citation dialogue in FH7 it gives you the option to add a shared note to the source record but doesn't have that option to add it to the citation. I can only think this was an oversight and I would have thought it should be fairly easy for CP to fix (but I may be wrong of course!). The shared notes are available in the 'All' tab as Mike has said.
Re: Shared Notes
Thanks Nick ( I also sent a little thank you for your AS app earlier today, sorry it wasn't much
)
I have added some shared notes to Individuals and run every report I could see and none of them duplicated the Shared Notes, so unless CP change then I will probably go that way, but I will try adding some Method 1 Census to a dummy tree to see if I can work with it or not, but I do have a lot already put on using Method 2.

Re: Shared Notes
Paul, that is because Source Citation Notes are not enabled by default.
With a Report displayed use Report > Options... and on Sources tab under Append from Citation tick Notes and click OK.
Then your Citation shared Note will be shown where it belongs in the Sources section under the Citation entry that is coupled to the Census fact in the body of the report with a superscript number.
Other details attached to the Citations are also shown in that Sources section depending on the Report > Options chosen and the settings in Tools > Preferences > Sources > Generic Source Formats under Citation Details.
