Witnesses on Baptisms

Post by mitcheip » 06 Feb 2021 11:31

When adding a baptism in AS is there any way to create a witness role for the parents?

The baptism of a person's child doesn't appear in their summary report unless they are a witness. Similarly, in a person's timeline, if there is a birth event the baptism event doesn't appear, (this is a setting in FH).

Just to understand what you're asking. Because of a possible limitation in FH reporting you want to add parents as a witness to their own child's baptism?

Hi Nick,

The simple answer is yes. FH gives the ability to add a witness as a parent to a baptism. When you have done this the event appears in both the timeline and summary reports.

At the moment I add them manually after creating the baptism in AS.

Of course, the other option is to ask Calico Pie to include these events in the summary report and timeline.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't do this using the Associated Individuals section under the 'Further Info' tab when entering a baptism in AS. You would need to add an Associated Individuals type using whichever witness role you use in FH first. Next to the 'Association' drop-down list there is an Edit... button and that's where you can set it up. Once the association type is in place you can use it in all future baptisms as you wish.

Thanks Nick, that worked..... Thanks a lot.

Another point whilst I am on. When you enter a baptism and do "Auto text", underneath "When Baptized" it says the date and No, which I presume is the Number of the entry in the register. I can't get the "No" field to populate. Where do you enter the number of the entry in AS to populate this auto text filed? At the moment I enter the number of the entry in "Further Info/Ref ID" field but this doesn't appear in the Auto Text, in fact I can't see the Ref ID in the source in FH at all.

Obviously all these things can be decided by individual users, but in the default settings I'd expect the 'Ref ID' field to be used to include a full reference to the citation. The No. field is just a single number that appears in the baptism register. So once all the data has been entered and you're happy that the Auto-text has done all it can, as usual you would then edit the source text manually and this is the point where you would type that number into the source text manually.

Another option would be to create your own modified version of the template. If, for example, you wanted to use the 'Other Info' to record the 'No' field you could go to Tools->Auto Text Template Editor... and then duplicate the template and give it your own suitable title and then insert the {OTHER} template field as indicated in the screenshot below:

Regarding where you see the ref id in FH... I'm assuming you're not using the new 'templated sources' in Family Historian 7 (which AS supports if you switch on the 'Use Template Sources' option). If you're using Method 1 using the default settings it appears in the Publication Information field when you look at the source in FH.
