Add Images to Existing Sources does not show exisitng images

Hi,

I thought the add images to sources would be useful when I found some extra media to add to an existing source such as updating an old source with a parish record image that is now available. I'm using Method 1, and I did read the help :D , but may have missed some subtlety.

I had assumed that it would show any existing images linked to the source like normal source entry, given it uses the same add/view images... but that does not appear to be the case. No images are shown as linked images either on the main dialogue, or the add/view images dialogue when selected, even when there are some. This seems a bit unintuitive as you'd tend to want to review what was already linked and maybe remove some as well as adding. As it is I'm loath to use it as I'm not sure if it will end up removing any existing links when I add anew one.

Is this behaviour by intent or is it a bug?

This does not answer the AS question, but it would be much easier to simply use FH, open the Source record and add the Media image directly to its Media tab &/or delete any unwanted Media. No need to involve AS at all.

Hi Chris

The purpose of the 'Add Images' screen is really to add images to sources where you don't already have them - hence the tick box at the top. AS doesn't show any existing images linked to the sources and does not alter those images in any way. If a source already has images any new images will be added to the source and the existing image will be left alone.

I disagree with Mike for once - if it was 'easier to simply use FH' then I wouldn't have added the feature to AS in the first place. The advantages are that it will rename the image using the same image or source title template that AS users usually use for their images/sources and also it will automatically select the correct folder to move the images to based on the folders usually used. So, for example, if you add an image to an 1861 England census entry it will automatically select the folder where you usually save those entries to (assuming you've used AS enough for it to have learnt that).

Cheers

Nick

Thanks, for that. It's basically what I thought; in that it is designed to add to what's there rather than provide a more comprehensive media update. At least I now know it won't change any existing stuff.

I'm with you on using AS, as I find it a bit of a pain in FH (maybe because I've not found the 'right' feature) to add new file as media to a source, as it involves creating a new media record before linking a source to it. Most of the process is mandronic and AS helps with that.

The quickest way is to put the media file in the FH Media folder or sub-folder (if you use sub folders) then drag-and-drop the file onto the Media tab of the Source record Property Box. This creates the Media record in FH at the same time as linking it to the Source record.
