AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
I've just upgraded to FH7 and then AS7. During the AS7 upgrade I thought I'd checked a box to keep my previously customised census templates. Whatever I did or didn't do, I'm left with a new set of census templates and exploring this forum and the AS7 menu options I'm not sure what to do next.
Is there a way I can get back to previous templates without having to customise each one again.
Many thanks

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
Nick will probably come back in due course, but AS now has templates for England, Wales, etc., as separate templates rather than bulked for the UK as before. Although I took regular monthly backups of my templates I didn't import these and have gone down the (slow) path of making my changes again!. (NB. if you do have backups, you can open the XML file and work your way through these in need to find changes, but I found it pretty easy, albeit slow, to just work my way through the setup within AS)

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
The changes to census templates are a bit more extensive than just replacing UK with England/Wales/Ireland, etc. There is also now a 'census type' which allows it support things that are similar to census records like electoral rolls. There are also options to, for example, use a residence fact rather than a census fact for some types (e.g. you might not want to use a census fact to record an electoral register entry). There are also new templates that weren't included before (Wales, Isle of Man, etc.). I also made a number of corrections to templates that I spotted and beta testers reported too.
However, if you do want to reimport any templates you had in the previous version you can do so because, as a message box announced when you first ran it, AS took a backup copy of those templates for you. For most people it would be a backwards step to do so but if you really do want to import them then go to the Tools menu->Census Templates and click on Import... at the bottom of the Census Template Editor screen. Navigate to the Ancestral Sources folder in your Documents and then into the Settings sub-folder. Within there you should see a file called 'Previous Settings v5.1.0' (or similar to that). Select that file and you can then choose which templates you want to import - you can click 'None' at the top so you can just choose the ones you want. As I said before I really don't recommend doing this because you will miss out on various improvements so only do this if you are really sure and only choose those you really need to import.

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
Nick,
There are census templates in the KB for the US, for individual states, and for Norway that I created. Can these be used as is in AS 7 or do they need to be converted in some way first?

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
Hi Bill
They can be imported in - AS will just add them to the default 'census' category. Don't mention the beta testing, I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it!
Cheers

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
Sorry Bill that was actually meant to be a Fawlty Towers (don't mention the war) reference and not to be taken seriously. Although if you never hear from me again you'll know what happened

Re: AS7 - Restoring Previous Census Templates
Nick,
I love Fawlty Towers... I just binge-watched it again last month. I must be getting more dense as I age... it is amazing how often things go over my head these days.
I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!

Thanks Nick for the explanation. On that basis I'll keep to the new onesNickWalker wrote: ↑16 Dec 2020 18:43The changes to census templates are a bit more extensive than just replacing UK with England/Wales/Ireland, etc. There is also now a 'census type' which allows it support things that are similar to census records like electoral rolls.
