AS7 Crashes with Images

Post by ChrisRead » 13 Dec 2020 17:06

I've been playing around with AS7 (64-bit) to see how the new auto templating looked, and had some crashes related to linking images. I was looking at possibly replacing existing sources with new ones with better looking auto text so I could get rid of separate transcription files.

I tried to link to the existing media record, and was getting the can't display image message and thumbnail, although it was fine in FH7 looking at the same record, which was odd. Subsequently, when I tried to save after finishing the inputs, AS7 crashed and the gist of the crash dialogue was that the file referenced by the media record was missing (it's not). I did this a couple of time from scratch and got the same result. I had done data entry prior to trying to link the media record.

I then had another go to see if the image type mattered (jpg v bmp) but the one AS7 previously didn't like now displayed Ok in the link file dialogue. I then decided to remove the image and try another, and this time got a crash when I clicked remove.

So, there are a few oddities going on with the linking to media files.

Hi Chris

Sorry about that. I wonder whether you would mind emailing me some further information via nick at ancestralsources dot com... Would you be able to send me the image file it was unable to open? Could you also send me me screenshots of any errors you get in AS? If these are genuine crashes then you should also get the chance to send more detailed errors when the error occurs. Anything you can do to help me to track down the issue would be much appreciated.

My current suspicion is it may be related to the new code for rotating images based on their embedded 'exif' information. The size of the image viewer and side-panel and zoom level might explain why it works sometimes but not others. But this is just a theory.

Thanks

Nick

I've been trying out various things to try and reproduce the problem with some better context to be able to provide better info. I'm (was, retired this year) a software developer, so understand what you need to know to be able to get anywhere.

I tried again after posting, but everything worked as expected and I was able to re-do a couple of death certificate sources and link to existing media record image with no problem (same as had caused the crashes). I could also delete a linked media with no problem too. So that's a bit frustrating as far as trying to find a recipe to reproduce it.

A thought I had was that I didn't have FH7 running when it worked, but have just tried with FH7 open on the same project and it still worked fine. Again, a bit frustrating.

As I plan to do some more over the next few days, I'll remember to be conscious of what I'm doing so that if either recurs I can provide you better context, and I'll capture the stack dump and error message. Worse case it's one of those intermittent phase of the moon bugs  .

Thanks Chris, yes these are always the difficult ones to fix! I'll await your future findings.

Best wishes

Hi,

Just an update. I've done quite a number of AS7 source creations and renewals of various types this week and not had the problem since the original report. So, fingers crossed it's a one off weirdness for a short period of time.

Cheers
