Can't launch the program

Post by billpearson49 » 08 Aug 2020 22:35

I have bought a new computer and had AS running on my old one against Family History v4.
I have upgraded to V6 of Family Historian and can't get the latest version v5.3 of AS to open.
It does nothing when I click the shortcut and doesn't show the menu.
I now realise that I should have migrated from old pc to the new one before uograding.

Any suggestions ?

One initial thought at 1am - though you should have spotted a problem with other programs. Could your new PC be set up to open programs with a double click, rather than single?

Neither single or double click work, but thanks for the thought.

When I click on the shortcut, the curser does operate for a few seconds but then stops before iopening the program.

Welcome to the FHUG Bill.

Firstly, there is a full migration guide at how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.
It is best to upgrade to FH v6.2 and AS v5.3 on your old PC first and then migrate to the new PC.
Review the guide, which deals with issues migrating Media files and customisation settings.

Which AS version was running successfully and do you still have its installation download file?

The Ancestral Sources Not Running ?5.3 (17978) posting had a similar problem with the 64-bit AS that was resolved by installing the 32-bit AS.
If that does not resolve the problem then possibly an anti-virus package is getting in the way and we can suggest workarounds.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I have now read about migration . Having decided to buy an upload of FH I thought I would do the same with AS, so I didn't read about migration until I couldn't run AS.

I was running AS v5.2.0 64 bit on my old pc alongside FH v4.1.3

I have switched off my firewall and scanning and tried reloading and running, but that wasn't successful either.

You mention workrounds?

If you reinstall AS v5.2.0 64 bit does that work OK?

If you install AS v5.3.0 32 bit does that work OK?

I don't think switching off firewall is a good idea nor will it help.
What scanning did you switch off?
i.e. What anti-virus product?

What Windows version are you running?

The issue may be that you don't have the .Net framework 3.5 installed. This page explains how to install it: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/dotnet ... windows-10. Follow the steps in the section 'Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 in Control Panel'.

Cheers

Nick, why would that be a problem when AS v5.2.0 64-bit had previously been installed and working OK?

Perhaps because that was on the old pc, Mike, not the new one?

If you check his postings I believe everything is on old PC for the time being.
He said: "I now realise that I should have migrated from old pc to the new one before upgrading."
That implies he has not migrated to the new PC yet and was upgrading on the old PC, which is actually best.

Hi, thanks for all of the replies.

I can't find a download for v5.2 to test if it works, and yes this was on the old machine.

AS 5.3 32 bit doesn't work either.

Scan and firewall was switched off to see if it solved the problem. It didn't so all went back on again.
I'm using McAfee.

.net framework 3.5 is installed.

I'm running Windows 10.

Not been able to run any version of AS on the new pc.

Bill, have you kept the original AS v5.2 64-bit downloaded installation executable?
If so, try installing that on both old and new PC.

Just to be clear, were all your original attempts on the old PC?

But you now say you have not been able to run AS on new PC, so is that a recent attempt?
It helps us understand the full scenario if you can give as many details as possible.

Are you running Windows 10 on both old and new PC?
Is .net framework 3.5 installed on both old and new PC?

Was McAfee disabled on both PC when you performed the AS v5.3 download and the installation and running AS?

You could try installing in Windows Safe Mode, which avoids most forms of interference from applications.
See how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#windows_safe_mode|> Windows Safe Mode for advice on entering Safe Mode that often resolves problems with installing FH so should help with AS. Download AS v5.3 afresh before entering Safe Mode.

Try running AS and then go to the start menu and type Event Viewer open up the Windows Logs and then the Application log and see if there are any errors that appear to relate to AS not running (the time should coincide with when you last ran it). If so then please double-click on the event to open it and then click the Copy button and paste the text as a reply in this forum thread.

Just for clarity...

I stopped using the old pc and downloaded 4.1.3 from FH on my new pc.
I then upgraded to 6 and downloaded the latest update 6.2.7.

Then I downloaded AS 5.3.

Family Historian is working well.

Bill, to be able to best use the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide you will need to install FH v6.2.7 on the old PC too, otherwise the migration steps will be compromised as ideally they require the same version of FH on both PC.

BTW: You did NOT need to install FH v4.1.3 on the new PC before installing the FH v6 Upgrade.
That is explained in the migration guide and the installation guide.
