AS not updating previous info

Post by dkbutler13 » 09 Feb 2020 03:38

I apologize if this is covered somewhere, but I've been looking through this group as well as the knowledge base and am unable to figure this out. I just started using AS, and I've just been messing with it on a copy of my FH. I'm having a problem with information not updating things that are already entered into FH.

For example, I entered the 1930 US Census using AS first. In that census, it shows that Louis is 36 years old. So that added to Louis a birth year of 1894 (cal). Next I entered the 1900 US Census. In that census, it shows that Louis was born in Dec 1894. However, in my FH, it still shows his birth date of 1894 (cal), even though the last census I entered has a more exact date. Is there any way to fix this so that it updates with the most detailed information?

Another side question: when using AS, do the census images appear as a media file for each person who has information cited from the census? Or is the image only linked to the citation itself?

Thanks so much!
Danielle

Hi Danielle,
To change the way AS handles birth information from censuses, use Tools>Options and select Census settings. There you will find options for Birth Facts where you can select Offer to create birth facts ...even if existing birth includes place and date. When saving the census entry you will then have the chance to decide, for each person, whether to change the existing date, or place, or both. (But do be aware that even if a census gives a very precise date, including day and month, it can still be wrong! Sometimes people knew their birthday but not the year!)

The census images are not linked to individuals. If you are using Method 1 (one source per census record) the image is attached to the Source record, which is cited for the census fact each individual. If you are using Method 2 (one source per entire census year) the image is attached to the citations of the source. This is something else which can be chosen in the Census settings. If you have not changed any of the default settings you will be using Method 1.

You asked about attaching the media to the Individual, if you simply want to see all the media attached to the individual or to facts and sources attached to them you can use the Media icon on the main tool bar and select the All linked media option. Generally this is better as you can then keep the media at the individual level to just that of the person concerned.

Danielle, try working through ancestralsources:ancestral_sources_tutorial_entering_census_facts|> Ancestral Sources Tutorial ~ Enter Census Facts.
At step (6) Save to Family Historian it mentions the updating of existing Birth Event options.
At step (7) Examine Family Historian it illustrates where all the captured data and media appear in FH.
