I want to add the parents and siblings of a non blood related spouse to a census entry. If I add them as a new person it adds them to my family tree and I just want a record of them, not actually to appear on the tree. If I add a new parent, or siblings do they have to be added to the tree or is the only way to put them as a note. Hope you understand, any help appreciated.
Thanks, Marilyn

If I understand correctly, you want to add those people to the Source record transcript of the Census data, but NOT add any Individual records to your Project.
You can only add people to the grid in the central pane of AS if they have Individual records.
So 'temporarily' add those people to AS as Parents or Siblings, etc, and tick the option to Add to entry following creation so that the grid gets populated with their details.
When finished adding everyone then remove the Auto update tick in the Auto text box below the central grid.
Now you can use Edit > Review/remove individual data changes and Delete each 'temporary' person.
Their details will be removed from the central grid, but retained in the Auto text transcript.
Now click the Text link to open the Text entry window, and enlarge it so the column headings appear on one row.
Now you can adjust the details of whoever you want, using the same style as the other row entries.
You should usually be taking this last step anyway, to ensure the text transcript is a faithful representation of the Census document. e.g. The names of people and occupations are as recorded in the Census document rather than as in your Project data.
When finished editing, close that Text entry window, and remember to tick the Auto update option.
Now you can Save the Census data entry.

Re: Parents of Non Blood Related Spouse
This situation often arises when there are individuals listed in the household who are only indirectly related, or not related at all, to anyone in your file. For example there may be servants, employers, or 'visitors' listed, who have no known connection to your relatives. It is always a good idea to record everyone who was in the household. It gives a better impression of the living conditions and sometimes a connection turns up later.
Whilst Mike's suggestion works, personally I think it is a bit long-winded. I don't bother to create records for those individuals and delete them again. I simply go straight to the Text box and enter them manually. You would have to type all the information into the main grid anyway, so it doesn't make any difference to the amount of typing.

Yes Lorna, I originally considered posting that method, and it is potentially quicker, but especially if you have customised the transcript column separators, then getting all those separators just right with the data in the correct columns may be tricky for some users, so I opted for the more long-winded method that creates the separators automatically.
As is often the case, there is more than one way to achieve an objective.

Re: Parents of Non Blood Related Spouse
I have started to list everyone (within reason) to an event (census or otherwise), even if it creates many 'people islands'. I would however create some ASSOciations between some of the individuals, and, if using source type 1, the theoretical connection is there in the database. This may show how friends of friends, or those meeting at an event come together for marriage etc, i.e. can help in the 'connections' history.
