Special characters

Post by ampt » 19 Jan 2016 19:18

I am using FH 6.0.4 running on Win 7 under Parallels on a MacBook Pro. In FH there is no problem using special characters (family is Hungarian, lots of special characters).

I installed and started using AS 5.0, but cannot seem to be able to use special characters. Since names with special characters are different from those without, that causes a problem.

Would anyone have suggestions?

It would help if you explained what you have tried, and what worked OK in FH.

Have you seen how_to:entered_accented_and_other_special_characters|> Enter Accented and Other Special Characters using either the Character Map or the Alt key techniques, which work in most programs not just AS and FH.

In FH, when I hold down a key, e.g. "e" I can choose from è, é, ë, etc. (This works as I am writing this as well.)

While using AS, this process doesn't work. I haven't tried anything else. I would love to be able to use the same process, because it is really easy.

I don't believe holding down a key to get a character is normal Windows behaviour. This is an option that Calico have written into Family Historian. If it is doing the same on your keyboard when typing into the forum, do you perhaps have an Apple computer?

On a UK keyboard (and others) you can press the right alt key and e for é and a for á and shifted for the capital versions and there are others that work too. For some characters you will need to use ALT and keypad numbers which as Mike said, are referred to in the knowledge base, eg. ALT+0234 (on the number pad) for ê.

As I said this is standard Windows behaviour.

Best wishes

The FH feature was only added in V6 and remember it is a commercial product.
I have not seen anything similar in any other programs.
AS is a free companion Program written by an FHUG member.
Try the techniques described in the Knowledge Base article.

Yes, Nick, he is using a MacBookPro.
