Witness roles

Post by rocksrock » 19 Jan 2015 19:34

I have some marriages, deaths etc already loaded up using the previous version of Ancestral Sources :D .

From now on I can enter the best men/witness etc using AS4.5 :D :D

How can I easily and simply add to my FH project the information I can now add in AS4.5 but could not add in the previous AS version? Or do I have to re-enter them all again from scratch -

Just to be clear, the previous version of Family Historian didn't support the witness role and AS supported it within days of Family Historian 6 was released. Therefore you'll only be to do this if you have Family Historian 6 (which I can see you do from your FHUG profile).

If, for example, you want to add witnesses to an existing marriage:
  • Right-Click on the marriage fact in the properties window
  • Click on Witnesses..
  • In the Witnesses dialogue, click on Add...
  • If the witness is an individual in your file then choose 'Add Individuals', if you just want to record their name then choose 'Name Only'
  • Then either select the individual or type in their name
  • Choose the role (witness, best-man, etc.) and then click OK and add more if you wish
The same methods can be used for baptisms, burials and other facts.

Best wishes

Nick

Witness Roles are an excellent addition to FH V6 but just be aware that they use custom FH Gedcom Tags that few if any other genealogy program will recognise, not even FH V5.

So if it is important that you can Export your Gedcom data to another program or an online tree, then use Witness Roles with caution.

However, the Export Gedcom File Plugin does allow Witness Roles to be exported in the local Note of the associated Fact but only as plain text.

Nick, Tatewise

Thank you very much! I'm very glad the new FH/AS combo does deals with witnesses like this, as to future export - well I have no intention of doing that, and if it later happens that I have to, well you have given me the method to do that too! :D ;)

This might be a useful tip.

I have found it useful to be able to edit Witness Roles in FH V6 after having previously added the witness in AS. So typically I might add as 'Name Only' and then revised it to an individual in the database when more information comes to light.
