I have added an individuals details from their birth cert.(Among them fathers name and mothers maiden name). I have then added the parents marriage , using AS. If I then look at the parents individual records the marriage does not show as a source for the spouses name only the birth certificate of their child. I can get round this by pasting the source, but should this not be done automatically?

It depends on your AS settings.
In Tools > Options > General settings center bottom there are Create name citations... options.
The default is to add Citations only for new Individuals/Names, but you can set it to all individuals involved in every new Source.
