Norton identifies threat in AS 4.0.1

Post by JohnLiddle » 23 Nov 2014 20:36

Hi,

my Norton 360 has just removed what it claimed was SAPE.BitCoinMiner.3 from a copy of ancestralsources64bit_4_0_1.exe on my machine,

Is this a false positive, or is there a problem?

Presumably that AS V4 installation file has been sitting on your PC since last April/May? So why would Norton suddenly claim it contains a threat? I suspect it is a false positive.

That is still over a month ago, so why has Norton taken so long.

If in any doubt try downloading it again, but I still suspect it is a false positive.

Well I know that AS doesn't include any viruses so it must be a false positive. This happened with McAfee a few years ago, I contacted them and complained and another McAfee update fixed it, but of course they never apologise for the effects this can have on the reputation of software that is wrongly accused.

Curiouser and curiouser.....

the errant file (if so it was) was a copy that had been automatically backed up to an external drive by GFI Backup.

I have checked the original downloaded copy with Norton and it is clean!

So... go figure!

I've just tried to download the file from the FHUG link and I'm getting the same error in that Norton is removing it as a threat.

Does anyone know how to get around this

You could try the method described in the following thread from the Norton Community site:

Hope it helps.
