I have been using FH (v 5.0.11) and AS (v 4.0.1) for several years on my netbook (running Windows XP). I have recently bought a new laptop with Win 8.1 and have successfully moved my FH project to the new computer. In order to continue using AS, do I simply have to install it on my new laptop or are there any files/settings etc which I need to transfer from my old computer? Are there any other known issues/ problems that I should be aware of?
Many thanks
Lizzie

Re: Reinstalling Ancestral Sources on a new computer
That question raises two issues.
(1) Family Historian
In order to migrate all your FH V5 set-up it needs more than just your Projects to be transferred.
You also need to transfer all your Preference settings and customisations of Diagrams, Text Schemes, Fact Sets, Reports, Prop Box Tabs, Queries, Plugins, Record Windows Columns, etc.
See the how_to:index#installation_guide|> Family Historian > Installation Guide
especially the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 Migration Guide.
(2) Ancestral Sources
If you simply install AS V4 then it will only have the default installation settings.
Just like FH it needs all the customised option settings, templates, etc to be transferred.
These are the steps:
On the old XP PC run AS and use Tools > Backup A.S. Options.
In Tools > Options note the location of the three Folders.
On the new W8.1 PC use AS Tools > Options and note the location of the three Folders then close AS.
Copy those folders from the old XP PC to the new W8.1 PC.
On the new W8.1 PC run AS and use Tools > Restore A.S. Options.
BTW:
If you kept your FH and AS folders in their default locations in My Documents, then the free Windows Easy Transfer could have transferred your entire My Documents contents from PC to PC for every Windows Account, and my still be worth looking at.

Thanks Mike, that's all very useful.
I think I'm ok with my FH transfer as I haven't customised any settings etc but I will certainly follow your advice for Ancestral Sources.
I did try using Windows Easy Transfer but there seem to be some problems with it on Win 8.1 so I resorted to the copy function in Windows Explorer.
