Auto texting

Post by Johnr65 » 15 Sep 2014 11:54

Last week I had my windows 7 renstalled on my pc. Since then when I run AS which I had to re download as well as FH5, the auto texting shows commas after the names and has condensed the text so that it takes a longer while than before for me to manually redo it.
Am I doing something wrong?

A few more clues would help John!

I guess you are talking about Census Grid Auto Text that defaults to separating Columns with Commas.

I also guess you changed the Tools > Options > Census settings > Grid Column Separator to something else like TAB.

Had you used Tools > Backup A.S. Options and backed up your AS Settings folder, then you could restore that folder and use Tools > Restore A.S. Options to get all your AS Options back.

You may discover that anything else in AS that you customised is missing.

The same may apply to FH if you have not backed up the glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder or used the Plugin Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings.

Yes I'm using the census auto grid text box. My pc was causing me problems. I've some back ups of As in my documents which say Back Ups, logs and Settings-can I use any or all of them to rectify the program?
I didn't change the settings for AS or FH5, all I did was to re download the FH5 program and AS plugins and the other plug ins that I use.

Yes, the Backups, Logs, and Settings folders are the ones to use.
They should be copied to the same locations as the AS Tools > Options > General settings > Folders identify.

Whether you can recover your AS Options set-up, depends on whether you ever used Tools > Backup A.S. Options.
If the Backup folder contains any AS Options Backup files, then after copying the folders, try using Tools > Restore A.S. Options .

As I said, the default AS Grid Column Separator is Comma, which sounds like what you are getting in the Auto Text.
If that is not what you are used to, then you must have forgotten that you changed this setting to Bar or Tab.
If you could attach a screen-shot here, then it would be easier to be more certain.

If you have only downloaded and installed FH and AS and Plugins, but not changed any settings, then they will all probably revert to the default installation settings.

To get your customised settings back you must either enter them all again by hand, or recover them from backups.
If you did not take any backups of the appropriate data, then you must do it manually.

If you need more advice of what backups are needed, in case the problem occurs again, then please ask.

I tried to use the restored back ups but nothing happened other than an error reported. I've amended the AS census auto texting to tab and that seems OK now.
Suppose it's no use crying over spilled milk, what do I do now so that this doesn't happen again?

In AS use Tools > Backup A.S. Options.

In FH use the Plugin Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings.

Follow the advice in glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery for both the AS folders and FH folders.

Although not a newcomer, some of the advice in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers may still be relevant.

The AS tutorial ancestralsources:ancestral_sources_tutorial_configure_initial_settings|> Ancestral Sources Tutorial ~ Configure Initial Settings mentions Backup/Restore A.S. Options.
