Where do the copies of the censuses, certificates, etc, end up? I know I'm saving them to the relevant folders but am I duplicating them?
Currently, I find a census on Ancestry and save it to 'my documents' file on the pc (can't be done with FMP as it doesn't support the save!) Then I use AS and copy the details from my pc and AS copies the original to it's or FH's folder.
When I look for the FH project or AS media files there aren't many census reports in there?

Did you configure AS to copy your Census images to your Project Folder?

If so once done you can then delete them from the original download location. AS will normally copy them to the Media folder and a sub folder with in that if you ask it to.

Ah that is where I've been going wrong, the default doesn't save to the project folder-I assumed it would do it by itself without asking.
Is there a way of finding where I've copied them to and sending them to the project folder?

Here are a number of suggestions.

It is advisable to use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin.

Have you worked through the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources Tutorials ?
In particular ancestralsources:tutorial:census:add_multimedia_image|> Ancestral Sources Tutorial ~ Enter Census ~ (2) Add Multimedia Image.

When adding an image file, and after clicking Save, you should be prompted where to save it in your Project Media folder:

If you don't Save then it will be linked, but remain in My Documents, which is not ideal.

If you open the Source Record the image should be on its Multimedia tab.

If FMP the Download link is bottom right:

To relocate is a two step process.
Use Windows Explorer to move the image(s) into the Project Media folder or sub-folder where ever you want.
Then in FH if only a few, open each Multimedia Property Box and specify the new Linked File: path by using the [...] browse button on the right.
Otherwise, use Tools > Work with External File Links to remap them together.

I've found them in a 'census' folder within the FH project with one for 'marriage certs' but there are more transcripts in the folders than outside them! Still I suppose as they're not lost I can delete the originals from 'my documents' folder on my pc?

It would help us to help you if you could be a bit more explicit.
Just referring to a vague 'census' folder does not give enough detail.

You have not responded to any of my points above.

In particular did you use the following advice to find your files:

To find where images are located, open the Multimedia Record Property Box and see the Linked File: box.
To relocate is a two step process.

I was referring to the folders within my pc in 'my documents' where it shows me the FH5 projects, for some unknown reason I seem to have 2 Rosser 030714 projects called nothing and (2) within these 2 projects I found the media and when opened up found what I described previously.
Sorry about not answering your question, Mike, I found the Multimedia file with a lot of my photos and census transcripts within it, however I couldn't find the linked file bit so am at a loss as to continue.
Being a technophobe I don't understand what happens with Windows Explorer after that anyway.

We will deal with the duplicate Project problem in a new posting later.
I thought we had sorted your Project in your posting Sources for Residence (11302) only a week ago!

Let us concentrate on the Multimedia Records for the moment.

I suspect you have clicked the Media camera icon in the toolbar to open the [Multimedia Window].
(FH says [Multimedia Window] in the title bar at the top and there is a camera icon on the left.)

On the top left it lists all your Multimedia Records under that heading with images to the right.
There are more columns to the right: Record Id, Type, Format, Year, Links, File, Updated.
You may need to scroll that pane using the scroll bar to see them all.
The File column displays the file path I mentioned earlier, probably starting from the Project Media folder..

Alternatively, double-click any Multimedia Record name and its Property Box will open.
This will show the same file path in the Linked File box.

These are all basic FH operations, so I suspect you have not heeded the advice I gave in another posting of yours to spend time learning about FH before rushing ahead.
It is a bit like taking a car out on the public highway before learning to drive - it will only end in disaster sooner or later.
Especially since in another posting you mention a 13,000 Individual database that you would not want to corrupt would you?

I've found the multi media records and the lists on the right by moving the actual media items to the right but I cannot see how to link the transcripts that are in the wrong folder into the project folder.
This is not an easy program to learn especially as I'm used to FTM's way of doing things. I'm beset with changing my original bmd dates from being in inverted commas to the 4 quarters now. My emigration data has been reversed by FH5 so that now people seem to be emigrating to England instead of away from it. The 13000 plus records have already been corrupted by FTM and I'm trying to correct them by going through every single record-not easy when you're an old dog trying to learn new tricks.
I found AS very good-what a pity the initial default save button is to a place other than one's project folder! Naturally one would fall into that trap easily, now I have to check each time that I'm saving to the correct location.
Overall I'm pleased with FH5 but it has some idiosyncrasies that I find challenging to say the least.

I suspect your main problem is that you are still thinking in FTM's way.
You MUST spend some time learning the new tricks in the FH and AS way.
I will say AGAIN that you should work through the supplied tutorials.

The default AS Save does use the Project folder, and the fact that you found all your Multimedia files (photos & transcripts) in the Project Media folder confirms that.

If you had asked, then there are automated ways to correct most of your BMD Dates.
Did you checkout the how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian advice, especially on Fixing Dates, etc.

Please don't blame FH for reversing your Emigration data, because FH is the most GEDCOM compliant program available, so I suspect FTM got it the wrong way round.

I've had a look at the change date plug in but as I have over 9300 dates in inverted commas, all I get is a list of them from the plug in. If I try to use the PAF one it says I shouldn't use it on my original project so no help there. Isn't there a plug in that will simply change the 4 types of inverted comma dates to the FH5 quarters?
By the way I didn't find all the transcripts in the media project box -there are some missing.

Please do not misquote the Import From PAF Plugin.
It says "Only run on a Project COPY or a Project with a BACKUP" just as a precaution.
So, simply use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup just in case there are problems, and then run the Plugin.

Regarding the transcripts, did the File path in the Multimedia Records tell you where they are (as explained above)?
Tell us exactly where they are and they can easily be corrected.

I tried the PAF plug in with the small back up but it didn't change anything, I've still got over 9300 records with inverted comma dates!
I've deleted the spurious project from yesterday as it didn't have as many records as my one I've used today so I think all my media items are intact now.

It sounds like the FTM dates are a new format we have not come across before.
If you can supply some typical examples of the Date formats I can probably adapt the PAF Plugin to correct them very quickly.

Before I used FTM, I had a smaller program from famtree which used quarters like FH5 does but when I went to FTM they wanted the qtrs changed to bet jan-mar, bet apr-jun, bet jul-sep, bet oct-dec for all the years. When I uploaded the ged com from FTM to here it put all these into inverted commas eg "bet jan-mar" so the qtrs have been translated 3 times now!

John, if you can post a screen shot of the Date Phrase Plugin report, we can see the EXACT format so Mike can adapt the converter, it works by searching for string patterns so we have to know exactly how it's formatted to change it.

The problem is that GEDCOM has no Date definition for Quarters so different programs handle them in different ways.
Even though FH displays Q1, Q2, Q3 & Q4 it actually saves Q1 as BET JAN 1999 AND MAR 1999 in GEDCOM format.

However, there is a fairly quick fix for your Date Phrases using the Search and Replace Plugin.

Use this Plugin four times, once for each Quarter Date format.

This assumes your Dates are literally in the format "bet jan-mar 1999" and not perhaps "Between Jan-Mar 1999".
Whatever format you use must be replicated in the Search box illustrated below.
Except that hyphen - becomes %- and the year becomes (%d%d%d%d).

• Run the Search and Replace Plugin
• In the Search box enter literally "bet jan%-mar (%d%d%d%d)" including the string quotes (")
• In the Replace box enter literally Q1 %1 with no string quotes
• Select LUA Pattern Mode on the right
• Untick all the Basic Filters below except Date fields that must be ticked
• Click the Search & Replace button
• In the new window check the Q1 date looks OK and click Replace
• When happy the changes are OK, untick Confirm every item found and click Replace
• The Plugin will change all the rest and display the changed Dates

Repeat the above process for each of the Quarters using:
"bet apr%-jun (%d%d%d%d)" with Q2 %1
"bet jul%-sep (%d%d%d%d)" with Q3 %1
"bet oct%-dec (%d%d%d%d)" with Q4 %1

You can Copy & Paste the Search and Replace text above to ensure it is correct, but must use Ctrl+V to Paste into the Plugin boxes.

Tried that, looked good but came up with Q1 "Bet Jan-Mar" on the first one it found. Does it matter that the string in inverted commas also includes the year for every qtr for every person ?

Did you adjust the Search box to say "Bet Jan%-Mar (%d%d%d%d)" as advised above.

In other words the initial capital letters on Bet and each month must match.

The year is matched by the %d%d%d%d i.e. 4 digits and captured by the parentheses, which gets substituted into the %1 in the Replace box.
