Adding an unrelated individual

Post by jmurphy » 15 Jun 2014 16:28

I'm returning to FH and AS after a long interval and have just installed AS 4.0.1.

I was entering a household from the 1901 Census and the family had a boarder who was not yet in my Family Historian database.

I ticked the box "Add to entry following creation of individual".

Am I reading the help correctly -- is this supposed to add a new person to Family Historian? IIRC back in the Gedcom Census days one had to go outside and add the new person to FH first, then come back to GC.

After adding this household I went back to FH and the new person wasn't there.

Maybe I shouldn't be entering data before I've had my morning tea ;) but I'd appreciate it if you could tell me the correct procedure.

edited to add -- I checked to make sure that I had Family Historian and Ancestral Sources looking at the same Project (as far as I can tell, they are).

Checking FH for the head of household, I now see that his details aren't listed either, so it seems as if the entire entry did not get saved to FH. When I switched over to FH, I don't recall seeing the message that something outside FH had changed the database and it needed to be re-saved.

I should also add that this test database was one I downloaded from a tree created on Ancestry, so who knows what kind of glitches may remain in it after FH's validation / cleanup ran. I am also getting some notices from AS about how certain individuals already have Census entries, some of which seem to be spurious. I did have some Census stubs on the Ancestry tree, but what I would like is to have AS replace any of those with the real entries I am doing now.

In any case, this is all practice to get back up to speed on AS, so if I have messed up this file, there's no real harm done. What I would like to know now is how things should work, so that if I start having a real problem on my main files, I will recognize that something is going wrong.

I just added another household with an individual that was not in FH, and this time it worked beautifully. So I have no idea what I did wrong in the first case.

Hi Jan,
Since first time nothing got added to FH it sounds like FH and AS were NOT using the same Project. Maybe the tea helped the second time :)

Please try the Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin that guarantees both FH and AS are using the same Project .

To get up to speed with AS please work through the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources Tutorials.

Your assumptions about AS adding Individual Records and replacing existing Census Events are correct.
Please checkout the extensive Help pages within AS.

If your Project came from Ancestry then do spend some time ratifying the data.
There are several Plugins that can help such as:
Unidentified Data Fields (UDF) List
Find Date Phrases
Show Project Statistics
Mike Tate ~ researching the Tate and Scott family history ~ tatewise ancestry

Thanks -- I haven't done much with Plugins yet, but I'm looking forward to using them.
