Ampersand "&" in image file names

My census images are in .jpg files named for example RG10/4274/57/114 John & Jane SMITH (IMG_1924) the latter being the original image number assigned by the camera that took the picture (enables me to get back to the raw image if there were ever a total disaster with my FH data).

I copied some them into the FH Mulitmedia folder and the ampersands carried across quite happily, they also appear in the FH Multimedia Reocrds list so I can attach them via FH.

However, if I want to attach them as I load the underlying record using Ancestral Sources, there appears to be a difference. Clicking Add/View Images, Link New Image, Select File, shows the list of multimedia files with ampersands. Selecting the ones I want, the file name is given in the image viewer as "xxxxx John Jane SMITH xxxxx" not "John & Jane SMITH".

Is this of any importance? Will the attachment of the image through AS go correctly or will the missing ampersand cause a problem?

I could try it and see but I am a bit fearty with that approach where software and my data are concerned!

Thank you in advance for nay help

I have just experimented with that scenario, and although as you say the ampersand is missing in AS, it is retained when added to FH both in the Multimedia Record Title and the Linked File field.

BTW:
Could you please use the User Control Panel (centre top) and update your Profile for the Family Historian Version you are using.
This will allow us to give the best advice in cases where the FH Version matters.

I am interested in your technique of photographing Census Returns.
Most users obtain such images by downloading them from online sites such as www.ancestry.co.uk or www.findmypast.co.uk where they can easily be retrieved again in future.

Thank you for such a prompt reply! :D

I have been bitten a few times experimenting with stuff when I would have better taken advice first!

Profile updated

Thanks again

No problem.
Remember, you can always experiment with the Family Historian Sample Project without risk to your main project, and it can easily be reset via File > Project Window > More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project.
This applies to any experiments, not just using AS.

Note that all the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources Tutorials are based on the Family Historian Sample Project.

Thanks for pointing out this issue which will be fixed in the next version of Ancestral Sources. This is purely an issue with the way that Ancestral Sources displays (or fails to display!) the ampersand, the file name itself should be correctly handled.
