Save Entry Not Working

Post by Marshei » 09 Dec 2013 17:10

After I've filled in all the relevant details for the Census and clicked on "save entry to file"
nothing happens.
I go to FH but it doesn't tell me that an outside source has made changes.
I've looked in Sources-nothing there- nor in the facts tab in the relevant property box.
Any help appreciated. :?

The most likely reason is that the file you're saving in Ancestral Sources isn't the same file you're using in Family Historian.

In Family Historian have a look at File->File Statistics... and note the 'File Name' (actually a file path). Make sure this is the file you open in Ancestral Sources.

Best wishes

A possible explanation is that Ancestral Sources has modified a different file. Do you have more than one project, or more than one Gedcom file? For example have you got an old free-standing gedcom file from which you later created a Project for V4 or V5?

I don't know which version of FH you are using, but if you have a V4 or V5 Project then when you open Ancestral Sources use File>Open FH project and make sure you select the project you are currently working on. If you only have one project you can set this to be the default project for AS.
Similarly if you use an older version of FH and/or don't use projects, make sure you select exactly the same Gedcom file for AS and FH. You may have files with similar names but in different locations, so check the file paths carefully.

(Edit: Nick's reply, on the same lines, arrived while I was typing this)

Thank you Nick for your prompt reply.
I did as you suggested and found this file path
File Name: C:\Users\********\Documents\My Dropbox\Family Historian Projects\********Family Tree\********s Family Tree.fh_data\******** Family Tree.ged
I don't know why it's coming through Dropbox (I'm not a computer geek.)
I've realised that if I open the FH Project as opposed to the Gedcom file, then everything saves to FH as it should.
Many thanks for your time.
Kind Regards
Marlene

Thank you Lorna for your interest.
You're right, I do have more than one project and they were created in earlier FH programs
and imported into FH 5 Projects.
As you can see in my reply to Nick I now know to open the project file not the gedcom.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind Regards
Marlene

Marlene,
So that in future we know which version of FH you are using, please use the Profile link in the heading of the General Usage Forum on the main Forums page, and enter your Family Historian version.

Also, with FH V5 you could use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin that ensures the current FH Project is opened by AS.

BTW:
It is using Dropbox because you have chosen to put your Family Historian Projects folder within the My Dropbox folder (instead of the default My Documents folder) presumably so you can preserve your FH Projects in the Dropbox cloud storage &/or share them with another PC.

Thanks Mike for that info and explanation.
I do use Dropbox to keep my FH Projects safe, in case all else fails!
I shall also do as you suggest and enter my details in the General Settings.

Marlene

Be wary about using Dropbox alone for "keeping your Projects safe, in case all else fails!"

Soon after your PC FH Project files get disrupted/corrupted/deleted then the Dropbox files will be similarly affected.

Dropbox should NOT be seen as a replacement for traditional local file Backups, especially for data that has taken a lot of time and effort to compile such as priceless family history records.
It is a useful additional insurance, but not sufficient on its own.
See glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery.

Thanks for that.
I do back up to an external hard drive as well.
