appearance of AS in Windows 10

Post by wigansaint »

Wonder if anyone is having same problem as me.I recently purchased new laptop and installed both FH v7 and AS.(Both 64 bit versions)
FH looks ok but when I'm using AS I find the screen appears slightly blurred i.e fonts etc not very sharp. Any suggestions as to how to improve appearance?

I recently also moved to a new laptop and did not have this type of problem. What are your settings in AS Tools / Customise, particularly Font?. If your FH display is okay then it implies overall Windows display Options (viz. Resolution, Scale, etc) are okay

Same as me!. Might be worth playing around with a couple of the other fonts - although, for my setup, I haven't so far found anything that is better than Tahoma. Otherwise, can only suggest wating and seeing if others have alternate suggestions. Sorry!

You have not opened a Project!

AS looks greyed out exactly like that in any Windows version if you don't open a Project in AS.

Have you migrated all your FH and AS settings to the new PC?

I strongly suggest you use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry plugin from within the FH Project you are working with to ensure AS always opens the correct Project.

Sorry should have said that the appearance is the same with a project open. Could not transfer AS settings as laptop gave up the ghost.Luckily had FH projects backed up to external hard drive.

Will try altering font. Is ther a way of altering the colour?

The Tools / Customise option gives you a choice of a number of colour schemes.

I am not convinced. Please post a screenshot with a Project open in AS (not just in FH).
AS should show the Project name on the top window margin after Ancestral Sources v7.2.7: ...

Have you set the AS Tools > Options... General tab settings for the three Folders?

Have you tried the plugin I suggested?

PLEASE use the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin and the AS Tools > Backup A.S. Options... command both to external or cloud storage, as I guess you have lost your FH customisations too.

General tab settings for the three Folders?

Sorry but which three folders are you refering to?

Was hoping to change background colour as that may be having some effect on the way I am seeing the font.(Need greater contrast)

Please, please, can you convince us that AS has greyed out controls with a Project open. If so, it is a major bug!
Does AS show the Project name on the top window margin after Ancestral Sources v7.2.7: ?
Are there Individual records listed in the top righthand Find Name pane ?
If not, then all other investigations are pointless.

In AS use the Tools > Options... command and at the top of the General settings page there are three paths for Folders.
Settings Folder: ... \Ancestral Sources\Settings
Log file Folder: .... \Ancestral Sources\Log
Backup Folder: ... \Ancestral Sources\Backup

This is normal for AS if no project is open in AS then the Icons are ¨Greyed Out¨.

Close a project in FH and you will get the same effect for the FH icons.

Mike, I'm not convinced that wigansaint is complaining about greyed out controls. The first post says "the screen appears slightly blurred i.e fonts etc not very sharp". The problem seems to be lack of sharpness. It doesn't look very sharp in the screenshot but that might be due to the resolution of the screenshot itself. We need to see a simailar screen shot of 'sharp' fonts in FH for comparison.

But he says "that the appearance is the same with a project open" which is not usually the case.
The menu bar icons are coloured and the text is blacker and clearer.
I would just like to see a screenshot of AS with an open Project to see how blurred things are then.
The screenshot looks just like AS does on my PC without a Project open.

On my computer and monitor, the image is still very clear and crisp even if no project is open. My monitor is 1920 x 1080.

If so, it is a major bug!

If other people dont have the same problem cannot see it being a major bug.
I appreciate the screenshot I showed was without a project open, but when I open a project I do not notice an appreciable difference.
I did ask if there was a way of changing the background because I may have a problem myself distinguishing the black font on the background colour.(more contrast between colours possibly needed).
Will have a play with the screen resolution settings to see if that helps.

Appreciate the input though.

Do you have Clearype turned on and adjusted ? (Settings > Personalisation > Fonts > Adjust ClearType Text).

It may not help as FH doesn't suffer from the same issue on your PC but worth ruling out.

What is your screen resolution?

I'm grasping at straws here, but what scaling do you have Windows set to? Settings > Display > Scale and Layout.

Mine is set to 100%. If I increase that, I see some fuzziness in AS. If you have it set higher than 100%, try setting it to 100% and see if that helps.

A screenshot of both AS and FH with a Project open would be REALLY helpful for us to see and to compare fonts.
When AS has a Project open there should be an appreciable difference as I described earlier.
You keep saying there is no difference, but for a start, the toolbar icons should be in colour. PLEASE post a screenshot.
