Text for Emigration & Immigration Facts

Post by tatewise » 21 May 2012 12:21

In many scenarios only one of the two Place names are displayed for Emigration and Immigration Facts.
This problem is illustrated perfectly by the entry for Julia Amanda FISH in the Family Historian Sample Project.

On the Facts tab of her Property Box the Facts list only displays the To: or From: _PLAC tag value respectively.
The Place PLAC tag value is NOT displayed in either Fact.

Similarly the Plugin API fhGetDisplayText(ptrFact) only includes the _PLAC tag value for Emigration and Immigration Facts.

Conversely, in Diagram Text Schemes the default Emigration and Immigration Items only include the PLAC tag value but with misleading wording.
e.g.
Emigrated: 12 May 1906 in Liverpool (should say 'from Liverpool')
Immigrated: 12 May 1906 in America (should say 'to America')

The Standard Query All Facts only lists the PLAC tag value for Emigration and Immigration Facts.

Reports are all OK and include both the from and to values for both the _PLAC & PLAC tag values of Emigration and Immigration Facts.

This has prompted me to finally let you know the problem (?) in the plugin Map Life Facts v3.0 with both immigration and emigration. When dealing with these facts, it displays one of the places in the links on the left of the page but shows the other place in the actual map. I would have thought it would show both places and both maps. Can this be adjusted or do we have to live with it?
I've tried uploading an image (jpg of 26kb) to illustrate but for some reason it continually fails.

Yes John, it was exactly that behaviour that caused me to investigate and report problems with these two Facts.
Currently, the Map Life Facts Plugin uses fhGetDisplayText(ptrFact) to list all Facts.
However, this only dislays the _PLAC tag value for these two Facts.
Currently, the Plugin only maps PLAC and ADDR tag values.

I have reported the problem directly to Calico Pie.

I will update the Plugin to also map the _PLAC value in a later version, but need to decide how to hyperlink the Fact to two map Plot markers.

John,
The Emigration and Immigration Events have only one Address: ADDR field, despite having both Place: PLAC and To:/From: _PLAC fields.

Do you use the Address: ADDR field?
If so, do you associate it with the Place: PLAC field or the To:/From: _PLAC field?

For the Plugin Address…Place options, I am inclined to associate the Address: ADDR field with the Place: PLAC field as for all other Facts.

[EDIT]
But what if there is no Place: PLAC field?
Should the Address: ADDR field stand on its own as for all other Facts?
Or should it be associated with the To:/From: _PLAC field?

I use the address field to hold the name of the vessel, so would not need to use it for map life events.

Mike,
I use the Immigration tag for people migrating between countries and the Emigration tag for people travelling, whether that's internal or external to a country.
I only occasionally use the Address, generally for the name of a Port, e.g. Port Jackson (Address) in Sydney, NSW (Place).
This is applied to the 'To' field. To make clearer :
my Immigration sentence is '{individual} migrated to {_place} . {note}'
my Emigration sentence is '{individual} travelled to {_place} . {note}'
I hope this is clear.
what if there is no Place: PLAC field?
With my method of use, there will (almost) always be a PLAC field otherwise I probably wouldn't be raising an Event.
Should the Address: ADDR field stand on its own as for all other Facts?
Or should it be associated with the To:/From: _PLAC field?
For consistency I'd be inclined to say stand on its own.  For my personal usage, I don't think it matters.

The Emigration & Immigration Facts have been corrected in FH V5.0.9 as originally requested in this thread.

This automatically improves the Map Life Facts Plugin.
It now correctly lists and plots the Place (PLAC tag) and Address (ADDR tag) fields in the same way as every other Fact.
The To/From (_PLAC tag) field is also listed, and may gain an associated plot in a later version of the Plugin.
