Moving a family branch

My project has got too big to handle easily as I have put all my different ancestral branches on the one project. I wonder if anyone could explain to me how I can move one family branch to a new project in its entirety eg my grandmother on my fathers side?

You can simply copy your Project (More Tasks Menu) and use the split tree helper to delete all persons not related to the root you want to use.

I would how ever consider carefully if you want to do this as it has the potential to duplicate your effort as inevitably some some people seem to end up in both Projects.

You don't mention why you are having a problem, I know of people with ten's of thousands of people who use FH with out issue. What is causing you a problem.

I go along with Jane's advice. Consider carefully before taking this step.

Other FH users later choose to merge back together again, because managing separate projects for the same family becomes difficult.

How, for instance, would you create a family tree of all ancestors for your father, if his mother's tree is split off?

Thank you both - I am quite a new user so its more about my lack of ability to see the tress I want etc with the siblings and thought this might be the answer. Anyway havebooked myself on one of the beginners courses to give a jump start so will follow your advice and leave things where they are for now! Thanks for taking the time to reply. [grin]

I was having the same problems as the other members who split their tree into pieces.
Having re-combined everyone I have set up 'Family Line' Flags (11 lines plus Unknown Line and Unproven Link).
This has proved extremely useful, I display the persons family line in 'Records view', I can get a Standard Query (has Flag) for all those in the family line and am now including the Family Line as part of the Media Keywords to help search for a Media item.
I have added a 'Flags' tab to the Property Box to easily tick the box when adding a new person.
That is my solution for handling 5000 tree members.

Johny, I would be interested in how your Family Line groups differ from Pool number groups.

I have seen the 'Pool' phrase used in the Forum but I have no idea what they are or where to find them.
They are not in the Help file or in the 'Getting the Most From' book.
I would be interested in knowing what they are and how to access/use them.

If you search for 'pool' in the FH Help you will find 3 pages, each of which contains:

Function Name: RelationPool
Description: This function returns the 'pool number' associated with a given individual. 2 individuals belong to the same pool if they are related to one another directly or indirectly. Family Historian calculates how many such pools there are in a given file, and arbitrarily assigns a number to each one. By looking at this pool number you can determine how many distinct groups of related people (directly or indirectly related) there are in the file. The 'Search for Orphans' query uses this function.

I suggest you run this Standard Query. You can also add an extra column to the Individuals Records window using the expression:

See the Standard Query called Search For Orphans that lists the Pool number of each Individual.
It uses the =RelationPool() function:

This function returns the 'pool number' associated with a given individual. Two individuals belong to the same pool if they are related to one another directly or indirectly. Family Historian calculates how many such pools there are in a given file, and arbitrarily assigns a number to each one. By looking at this pool number you can determine how many distinct groups of related people (directly or indirectly related) there are in the file. The 'Search for Orphans' query uses this function.

The Query is called Search For Orphans because the largest Pool numbers with the fewest members are listed first in the Results Set, thus identifying solitary or very small groups of Orphaned Individuals.

This Pool number can be added to an Individual Records Window Column using the =RelationPool() function.

Thanks for the pointer to the 'Pool' reference, I just looked in the Index and couldn't find it.
I have attached a screen shot of my Individual Records screen which show the various family lines that I have set up.
If the Pool No.s were used they wouldn't mean anything to me. I wouldn't know what 23 or 38 meant.

The Family Lines are based upon-
My Maternal Line/Paternal Line, Wifes Maternal/Paternal, Sister In laws Husband, Daughter 1 Husband Paternal/ Maternal, Daughter 2 Husband Maternal/Paternal and so on.

It works for me.

OK, your Family Lines are quite different from Pools, because it sounds as if they would all be in Pool 1, as they are all related to you, either directly or by marriage.

Interested in your concept of Family Lines but not clear exactly how you use flags to achieve it. Is there a separate flag for each line? And what exactly is displayed in the Records Window - is it the name of the Flag? (in which case I assume you have an additional 13 columns??) I would like to use a similar technique but struggling a bit with the implementation! Ideally I would just have 1 column headed 'Family Line' with the value for each individual, but your screen shot shows at least 2 columns......

I suspect what John has in his Column Expression is something like:

=Text( TextIf(Exists(%INDI._FLGS.__WEBB%),'Webb','') . TextIf(Exists(%INDI._FLGS.__AKERS%),'Akers','') )

or possibly:

=TextIf(Exists(%INDI._FLGS.__WEBB%),'Webb', TextIf(Exists(%INDI._FLGS.__AKERS%),'Akers', '') )

The 1st will list all Flags.
The 2nd will list only the first Flag it finds.

Both can be extended with extra replicas of the same structure to cater for more Flags.
John has at least 5 Flags in one column.
