* Creating a Multimedia Object from a multi-page Doc

I've got a scanned copy of an 8 page magazine article written by one of my ancestors. I want to create a multimedia object from the article and link it to a new source. At the moment, the article is a PDF. What's the best format to use when creating my multimedia object(s)? Would it be ok to leave it as a PDF and have it as one multimedia object linked to my new source? Or would I be better converting the article into 8 separate JPEG images, and have 8 separate multimedia JPEG objects (one for each page) linked to my one new source?

Another possibility: convert the PDF into 8 JPEGs, create a new JPEG incorporating all 8 images into 1 new image (using IrfanView), and then create one new multimedia object.

Or is there another way of handling this?

I suspect it would be better to leave it as a PDF and link that.

However, it depends what you plan to do with the magazine article. If you want to be able to display it in FH reports then PDF won't work and you would need to convert it to an image file. But in that case creating one large image doesn't seem sensible as the image would probably be too small to read in the report. Also if you do need to include it in a report would the magazine article be readable anyway unless the image in the report was very large?

Thanks Nick. Interesting point about including the image in reports, etc and whether it would be readable if I did - I'd not considered that. Hmm...

One way around it would be to transcribe the whole article and have this show in reports as 'text from source'. One for me to ponder...

I had a 'leaflet' that was a transcript of a speech that one of my ancestors had given.

I took a photo of each page (or two on a double page) with a digital camera. At the end I had around eight inages in JPEG format, which I could link. These can also be read with Windows Photo reader which I can zoom in/out with. The images are also there if I want to include them in a document.

This works well with Wills etc. that are two large to scan. Often they come out much clearer than items that I scan.

I'm toying with the idea of creating a PDF m/m object and 8 separate JPEG m/m objects. That way I can view the document in its entirety (using the PDF version), while using the individual JPEGs in reports. I haven't yet ruled out the possibility of using transcriptions in reports as well (or instead of using the JPEGs). I've had the possibilities of using Optical Character Recognition to help in this brought to my attention as well.
