Engagements

If you apply an engagement to an individual there needs to be a spouse to select. If they never marry it still calls the other half a wife when you produce a website and shows them as such.

I want to show an engagement but do not wish to show the female party as a spouse or show her on the web pages.

Can I apply an engagement without the female being a spouse? Or how can I link the male party and the female party to show the engagement and be able to hide her when I produce the web pages?
Thanks

You don't say what type of Report you are using.

If using the default ...(for Web, CD or DVD) Reports, then whatever you do the male party will always be listed in a Family as a Husband if you include him in a Spouse Family Record.
This is true even if you add the Private Flag to the female, and use the Create a Website default to exclude all Private individuals.

The best solution is to add the Private Flag to her, and use the Individual Narrative Report.

(1) Add the Private Flag to her as follows.
Select her individual record and use Edit > Record Flags, then tick Private and click OK.

(2) To avoid any mention of her and the word wife adjust the Marriage Status to Never Married.
This is in his Property Box on the Spouse tab at the bottom.
Click on the Status drop down arrow on right and choose Never Married.
Then the Report will say He and his partner became engaged in ....

(3) When using Create a Website Wizard, at Step 3 - Choose Report Template, set Primary Page Type to Individual Narrative.

The only other option is to exclude her from your database entirely, but add a Note to him saying he was Engaged, Where, and When.
Then this Note will appear in his Web Page Report.

Engagement is part of the family record and unless you set the marriage status to Never Married, FH assumes the marriage took place.

Try following Mike's instructions for setting the status to 'Never Married' Then FH will report them as 'Partner' instead of husband and wife in narritive reports. Not sure on the rest of reports.

Thanks for your ideas. However, I do not wish to produce a report. I use the create a website option to load my information onto my website. When FH produces these pages it refers to the engaged person as wife even though there is no marriage recorded. It seems that my only option is to have the female as an unconnected individual and put a note on her. By putting a private flag on her this will ensure that when i produce web pages with the do not include private flag records, she will not appear.
It seems that there should be a way of recording engagements without classing the parties as husband and wife. Is this some thing that can be considered in a future update?

You say you are NOT producing a Report, but that is exactly what you are doing for each web page.
Each web page is created by using one of the many Report options.

The Create a Website Wizard Step 3 - Choose Report Template selection chooses which Report to use for every web page.
You can choose any of the various Report options and customise it to suit your needs.
Steps (2) and (3) above ensure that instead of husband and wife the word partner is used in the Individual Narrative Report chosen to create each web page.
This will achieve your objective - just try it.
