Dunce's hat on and still learning how to input my sources.
Having purchased a replacement for my now finally and totally deceased 7 year old scanner, I have scanned some of my many Marriage Certificates into Pdf files but when I add the image to the marriage data previously uploaded into the Marriages template AS says it can't display the scanned image in this format. The image that appears is a thumbnail of the white on black AS message which says it cannot display.
Has my MC image been properly added to FH5 or must I use an AS compliant format, and if so what is it?
Will there be the same issue with other AS templates when I get round to adding scanned images to the data already uploaded?

For AS (and for that matter FH) to show your image it must be saved as a jpeg image.
There are free converters available that can convert your pdf's to jpeg, but I would advise scanning as jpeg in future

Both FH and AS will link to any Multimedia files such as PDF, but you must click on the FH red triangular Open in Editor/Player button, or the AS Click here to show it in the default viewer message.
Then the PDF will open in Adobe Reader or equivalent editor/player/viewer.
For pictures and document images it is better to use JPEG or GIF or PNG or one of the other graphics file formats that will display directly within FH and AS.

As Mike has said, Ancestral Sources supports PDF documents in exactly the same way that Family Historian does. It allows you to link PDF documents and view them in a PDF viewer by clicking on them.
However, Family Historian doesn't allow you to include PDFs in reports so it probably best to use PNG or JPEG.

Many thanks for the swift replies. Fortunately as I have only just started, it will only take an evening to rescan in Jpeg.

You don't need to rescan, you could just use the converter in the downloads to turn the PDFs in to jpgs.

Yes,I was able to convert the pdf files to jpeg using Photoshop Elements 5 - that's a relief.
However, linking the now jpeg images to the previously uploaded marriage data is another issue:
I wanted to bring up the previously 'completed' template, a) to attach the Jpeg image and b) to edit a slight error in part of the data previously entered, but I don't see how to access the previously completed template for this editing. Is there a way to do this or does one have to go through the whole business again from scratch?

You need to change each Multimedia object in Family Historian so that it points to the new jpeg rather than the PDF. Have a go and if you can't work out how to do that I'm sure someone will explain if you ask on here.

What Nick didn't say is that AS is aimed at providing a convenient way of initially capturing new data.
All the data is simply inserted into FH and nothing is retained by AS.
AS removes the tediously repetitive nature of entering new data.
So, any further minor changes should be entered directly into FH.
You should ensure you become familiar with how AS inserts data in FH in order to maintain consistency.
The
Ancestral Sources Tutorials each have a final
Examine Family Historian section to explain this.
