Can a CD 'website' be viewed on an iPad?

Post by lindad » 18 Sep 2012 09:12

Hi

I have a large family reunion taking place in a week or so and I've produced a CD from FH. It's quite a large file and will be accompanied by a photograph album (using PowerPoint or possibly a PDF). Am just wondering whether there is anyway that I can make this 'CD website' available to those technowizards who will be attending and bringing iPads with them... rather than making them all wait until they get home to use their desktops!

Not yet having an iPad myself, I haven't quite got to grips with what is and isn't possible!

Thanks!

I do not have an iPad but a Google search suggests that the iPad has no USB port and no CD/DVD drive.
There is a Camera Connection Kit that offers a USB port for external hard drives and pen drives.
However, the iPad can only read image/picture/video files and not any other types of file.
So the answer to your question would appear to be NO.

The only alternative would be to put the FH website files on a website on the Internet.
See how to Upload Web Pages for advice.

You could explore making an FH book.
They can be produced as pdf's which can be viewed in certain apps on ipad etc.

I have managed to load get cd/website on to Android phone and view it with 'Dolphin' browser (others might work) but I cannot do the same on an iPad.

If you use dropbox you can view all the photos images in your project media folder via the iPad.
You can load on pdf of tree diagrams, but they are bit slow focusing each time you move it.
If you have something like 'Quickoffice' on the iPad you can view the pages of the cd but none of the links will work so it's practically useless.

As has been suggested if you had an internet website then an iPad could view it from there. But whereas with Android you can get some browsers to find files within the phone. You cannot do the same with an iPad.

You can get some programs that allow you to transfer a website to an iPad, but its not something you can do without a computer. You may be better off producing a PDF, which can then be emailed and viewed very quickly.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm just going to have to stick with giving everyone a CD! The CD option provided by FH is interactive and so well done... it's an ideal way to present a large tree to everyone coming to a family reunion as the number of pages it would take to print everything just isn't an option. However, handing everyone a bright shiny disc is a bit dull in comparison with giving them something they can look at immediately - which is why I hoped those with iPads would be able to dive in!

Strange that the CD doesn't provide the option to include any diagrams though... Oh well, you can't have everything I suppose.

It is very easy to save as many diagrams as you like as JPEGs and then to include them on the CD by adding several pictures at Step 4.

Yes, see how to Make a Family Tree CD/DVD or Website in the Knowledge Base and checkout Step 4 – Add Items for Table of Contents.

If you are looking to use an iPad you could upload your tree to ancestry and then use the ancestry app to view it on the iPad. Won't cost an arm and a leg either so worth trying.

I connected my Laptop to the TV via an HDMI cable and displayed the FH CD that way, I was also able display the FH programme and answer questions by displaying instant charts on demand.
