Court Cases

Post by Johnyeates » 13 Sep 2012 09:45

I have a couple of tree members who were involved with High Court cases, one leading to a suicide which I have the newspaper reports and coroners report.
Do I create a new fact called say Litigation or just use the Misc fact? Any advice would be appreciated.

See also my reply to your Burials & Graves posting.

There are no Standard GEDCOM Facts that are suitable, unless you cite all the Source details against the Death event.

Misc must be a Custom Fact that you have imported or defined, so it is a personal choice as to what Custom Fact you choose to use.
Litigation sounds like a good all embracing Fact to cover all manner of court cases.

To determine whether a Fact is Standard or Custom use Tools > Work with Fact Sets.
In the Fact Set box at the top select Standard and only Standard GEDCOM Facts are listed.
Alternatively, for each Event/Attribute if its Fact Set column entry is Standard it is a Standard GEDCOM Fact.
All the others are Custom Facts.

Your're right, the Misc fact must have been imported from Family Tree Maker when I started using the 'New FH Ver 4' several years ago.
In checking the Custom Facts there are ten that I must have created over the fifteen years or so of using FTM from the early days of the pre-internet MSDos version where I was just storing facts passed down without thought of sharing the data with other computer programmes.
